968 symptoms - need help
#1

Hi: trying to post for advice.
In U.S.A. (northeast)

After 20 mins. of driving, it seems that after lifting off accelerator and then immediately accelerating again, the car (coupe, tip) seems to feel for 2-3 seconds that it hesitates, then goes as normal.

The tach doesn't jump and there's gas in the tank and nothing appears to be causing the problem from the way the car is driven.

Any ideas? It's almost as if it's chugging for 2-3 seconds and then kicks right back in to normal driving. This happens randomly and ONLY happens over 25 or 30 mph or faster on higways or long country road. Doesn't appear to be affected by hills or straight roads; just happens occasionally when lifting off accelerator.

For the past 2 years, I've occasionally put fuel injector cleaner in but that didn't make symptom disappear.

Maybe a dirty MAF. Slow to respond to sudden air flow changes because of dirt/buildup on the wire?

Yes, it a cheap fix and worth a shot.

Since you have a US car you can also perform a blink test. Do a search here and you should find a topic outlining the procedure.

HI,

You are not to far from me and I can scan it for you and let you know if there any codes if you would like. Im located in R.I. on Mass border near Providence
The mass air flow is definitely a good place to start if that dont work I would drive it with a fuel pressure Gage hooked up so you can see it through the windshield and try to drive it and see if you see fuel pressure drop when that happens.

Thank you all.
What's a mass air flow? Can I view it under the hood?
Thx.
I thought maybe a clogged fuel filter??

The mass air flow meter is located in the black plastic tube just before the throttle body ( the silver metal piece that the throttle cable attaches to). It has a wire going to it. The part thay you have to spray with special cleaner is a thin wire that is placed in the airflow stream coming from the air filter. DO NOT touch the wire or start the car until the cleaner has dried/evaporated completely.

The fuel filter is located near the rear passenger wheel. You get to it from the outside of the car. Easy and cheap to replace. It could not hurt.
