Need advice on choice of new cam
#1

I had my mechanic pull the valve cover to take a look inside and he said there are 2 BAD lifters. He's not sure about the cam yet but said I may need one. (two, I suppose)

I've done preliminary investigation on places that sell cams; RS Barn, Webcam, Pelican, Sunset. Prices seem to vary widely (if I read correctly) from about $600-1,600? I think they are all for the set of 2. Can anyone confirm this? Also, there are new, reground, and performance cams.

If I am shelling out such large sums anyway, I think I would prefer a performance cam. I'd like to feel SOMETHING for my money, after all. Are there any negatives to this? What are gains in power on an otherwise stock car?

Do I need to replace all lifters or am I OK with only replacing the 2 bad ones?

I assume I need to change the chain and tensioner pad. Is there anything else?

I am talking to the mechanic again tomorrow afternoon so I'd really appreciate feedback so I can decide what approach to take.

Thanks!
Todd

be very careful about performance cams - there are a couple of companies out there that are selling cams that flat don't work - so far, the only performance cams i've heard of that actually work are from rs barn - not sure if they will work on an otherwise stock engine though

i'd call pete and pick his brain

Performance Cams on a stock engine should give you an increase in power based on past experiance. However, you will need a dyno tune to optimize the gains as there is no chip for just cams. I wouldnt install Cams unless you are doing other work. The gains will be very minimal based on the fact that you would be running a stock header/exhaust/intake.

And if you do cams & a dyno tune, once you install other mods, you will need to do a re-tune to optimize everything again.

But who knows, they may do more then i think. I don't think anyone in the 968 community has done just cams alone.

I did the airbox mod but didn't think exhaust and headers were good for any gains. In fact, I thought the stock exhaust was as good as you could get, for power.

The original exhaust is a nice design, but has been found to be restrictive at high rpm. If you'd like to get the specifics, I'd suggest contacting RSB. I have an RSB cat-back system and wish I had installed it earlier.

nope - no gains from just a cat-back, and in fact all but the rs barn system loses one place or another, but there are gains from the header - do a search here - you will find dyno charts to illustrate that

After removal of the resonator I'd be really surprized if there weren't some gain at the top end...

i drove a car like that - there was a bit of extra snap over 5k (probably 3-4hp), but a dip in torque at just over 3k, just like every "free flow" system we've seen so far - gas velocity is critical on this car
