Cam bearing bolt alternatives?
#1

Wondering if anyone has replaced the cam bearing bolts with anything besides the factory triple squares. i don't see any reason why you couldn't replace them with a stainless steel m8x40 allen bolt. i would rather not deal with those triple squares again. i feel like the installation would be easier, and future dis-assembly would be easier with allens. not to mention they run around $1 a piece instead of $5.

Anyone have any expierience doing this? Any reasons for not switching to allens?

I was planning on sourcing the bolts from http://www.mcmaster.com/#socket-head-cap-screws/=r1yaz2

I'm not proposing that you use anything but the original. But, if you must, I'd generally advise against stainless. No need for it's corrosion properties, and I'd had issues with it picking up due to its low hardness. I think the cheesehead is a grade 12.9, not sure. If so, use an equivalent grade steel bolt. It will have similar mechanical properties.

do not put stainless into aluminum. they are dielectrically conductive. you will get corrosion there very fast.

as for the triple square, the reason they do that is so that you don't over-torque them. no reason you can't change, as long as you can control the torque.

I had ordered a replacement "cheesehead" bolt from the dealer because I could not find them anywhere else. It was a surprise when the order came in that Porsche just subbed an allen bolt in its place. I was pissed because of all the running around and waiting for the order and I could have picked up one of these anywhere for a lot less $$ as well.

i was wondering if Porsche subbed an allen head for the triple square, i have seen some pics online where it looked like they were allens.

as for for the bolt material, mcMaster has a few different materials. what about using the "alloy steel" option? I am using a nice electronic torque wrench with torque angle, so i am not too worried about over torquing, always been very careful about torque specs.

Is the alloy steel the correct grade/class? If so, it should be OK.
