968 Racing from Holland
#1

Hi:

My name is Ben and I use my (still street legal) 968 to race on tracks around Holland. Here a video of a few laps of the race of last friday at the Zandvoort track near Amsterdam: 968 vs. GT3 Cup, Cup loses... Too bad my clutch broke after a few laps, after which I had to let the fast guys by. Only 4th gear was left.

Interesting use of the world wide web. I get a message "Sorry! Unfortunately we don not grant access to Clipfish from your country." <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/huh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Just go with youtube or google video. I was able to get to the webpage after I made myself look like I was from Germany but it required me to register to see the video.

A local racer and shop owner in my area who races in the 944 Super Cup series Karl Troy, he runs a S2. He also lost the clutch in a race but ended up winning the race with no clutch, he was still able to shift between 3rd and 4th by matching revs. He's a bit of crazier driver and car abuse wasn't an issue.

I received the vid from a German racing friend (the mechanic of the GT3 Cup), so I don't have the file in youtube. Only solution is to use firefox... I do have some pics of the race from the clip though:

Bloody FANTASTIC Ben, you definately gave that 911 a hard time, love it..... be interested to know the specs of your car if you dont mind posting the, eg, any engine work, suspension, spring rate etc or PM them me if you like, as i'm well interested, would you mind if i posted the video on another forum just to piss the gt3 boys off, as they think they are far superior than the 968, this should keep them quiet for some time he he he <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> all the best Chris.

Well to be completely honest.. the GT3 is superior compared to a 968. A Gt3Cup even more so on a race track. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> With equally skilled drivers of course. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

hey Jarmol, we all know they are far better track cars, than the 968, but over on pistonheads there been a bit of banter between 911 gt3's and 968 owners, so it was a bit of ammunition for me to post up,to keep them quiet, the response's back were it must have been one of those rs turbo 968's, it was good winding them up though, regards Chris.

Heheh.. I have seen the banter between 964RS and gt3 guys at the PCGB forums.. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> You Brits are funny bashing each other's cars all the time.. in a friendly manner of course. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

wassup comparing the 968 to a gt3? we should be flattered if we even get included in that comparo. Cmon we're talking 10+ years of evolution here. Oh, and what, 100+ horses.

Ben welcome to the forums <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Got it down here in Australia just fine. We mustn't be the A**hole of the earth after all. lol Nice work Ben and while I agree that the driver of the video car looked more like he was out for a bit of a Sunday drive, you still held off far more powerful and tech sophisticated cars so congrats! I too would be interested in your build as the Cup car in 6th gear should have been reeling you in easily therefore must have something going on with yours apart from stock huh?

EDIT: Ah, I just noticed you have KW's in there. Which setup do you have and what spring rates? I have the 2-way race and am very happy.

Hey Ben,

It seems like a flying Dutchman.

Thanks for the nice words, guys! Some answers:

My 968 is actually still street legal. Obviously, the guy in the GT3 Cup was not the best of driver's. He rents this car (a whopping EUR 3,000 per day, times 1.4 for the USD) and I guess he was quite out of his depth. I was driving a lap time of 1.59 on the Zandvoort track, which is quite fast. The Cup should be at least 5 to 10 seconds quicker. If I was the guy in the Cup, I'd take a few more race lessons and start with a friendlier car (a 968 for instance). Still, I did manage to keep the 964 with 320 HP and the enormous rear wing behind as well. The 968 is a great and hugely underestimated car on the track (as we all know here).

The signs on the back actually read: KWPS, a consultancy firm. The car is not running on KW suspension, but on Bilstein. Nice, but next year I switch to Intrax, which had loads more possibilities to set up the suspension to the circumstances and my taste. In front I have 993 Turbo (Big Reds) brakes with rock hard Pagid brake pads: the best investment I made on the car (thanks, Lindsey Racing...). Off course in front I have camber plates to set the camber (mostly extremely negative). No idea about the type of springs. THey were installed by the guy who prepares my car.

The engine is pretty stock. I changed the chip which made it a little faster and the power curve smoother. There is no rev limiter any more, so I make about 7,300 rpm a few times per lap. The cat is gone and only 1 muffler is left. The best thing is the light single mass fly wheel: that really spins the engine up fast.

The hood and the side fenders are plastic and I have 2 plastic doors waiting to replace the heavy originals with the motors of the windows and mirrors in it. The airco and passenger airbag are still in, but they are due to be removed this winter.

The tyres are used Michelin slicks from the Porsche Supercup, 245 (18") around, so the car is set up "square" as we call it. A big step forward from running different tyre sizes front and back. The wheels are original Hohlspeichen from a 993 Turbo. With the light slicks on, a wheel doesn't weigh much any more.

Inside are 1 or 2 (depending if I take passengers on a track day or if I drive a race) Sparco Evo racing seats. Left 6 point harnass, right 4 point. Steering wheel is also from Sparco. Off course a welded cage is in place.

Yesterday I picked up a gearbox from a 944 Turbo S. This has 5 gears, which means the 1st and 2nd gears are longer, which should fit the car better on the track. Also, the box has hardened 1st and 2nd gear and has its own oil cooler (and a diff, which I have now as well). When really pushing the 968 on the track, the standard gear box suffers a lot and is (in my opinion) stressed to the limit. I will report how the 944 box checks out (2 November is a track day where I will try it out). Clutch is still the standard plate, but I broke 2 clutches this year. Time has apparently arrived for a hard racing clutch.

So far a few details of the car. Not sure if they still belong in this topic though...

Have you ever weighed your car (Km, pounds)?

I've got mines down to 2525 pounds without me in it.

It's still has all of its original Geman Steel as well as

the rear glass window..but I was wanderig what a

difference plastic makes.

Not sure what the weight is. When the plastic doors are in place and the rear window is changed for a lexan one, we will weigh the car. Changing from glass (especially the rear window) makes a huge difference. Keep in mind though that the weight you lose in the front is the most important. That's where the engine is and that's where the weight shifts to when you brake hard. If you have a super light rear half of the car and a still heavy front of the car, even the 968 can present some nasty suprises. Example: during the last race I drove for the first time after the pop up lights and electronic motors were removed. The car did behave better and I drove about 0.5 second per lap faster. Another good measure is placing the heavy and high up battery to the bay of the spare wheel in the back. This obviously gives you a much better balance.

After some significant weight mods, I always have the car set up with weighting scales to 50-50% again. This takes time and money but it really helps the balance and the speed of the car and makes it an absolute dream to drive.

My guess is that you'll find the stock 951 gears too high for a 968. They're too high for a turbo car, and I changed my crown wheel and pinion out to that of an S2 which shortens the overall final drive ratio. Of course this can be totally relevant to the tracks you drive on, but if you find that your new 'box is too tall, remember what I've said as this may just be the perfect solution for you. I would actually like one more gear but more for road cruising than the track. Even down the 1 kilometer main straight at our best circuit (Eastern Creek) I am not hitting 7000rpm rev limiter. The gearbox will be further put to the test with the new 16v motor which will rev to over 8000rpm, closer to 9. I may need to seek some different gearing then. The motor is being built now and will be in the car probably Dec/Jan. I know that most of you don't pay much attention to me and that's fine, but I'm only trying to help and will post pictures of the motor when it's done. Maybe as it's a blown extreme version of a 968 motor someone will listen. lol The bottom line for all this is fun after all.

Nice going Ben, I enjoyed watching your video!

Here's a brief clip of the current 3.0L car doing a short sub 30 sec hillclimb. Quite tricky and lots of fun. Notice the armful of opp. lock in the first run. That was on a left hand uphill corner that I took flat out in 2nd gear last year and you can see how I'm in 3rd this year with the changed cw&p.
