968-996 headlight mod
#1

SO working at the dealer I have access to some 996 headlight assemblies. (kinda wish they were 993 assemblise) but anyway. I was kinda thinking of performing a hack job to stick the 996 hi/lo beam portion in my 968 headlight holes. any input?

Flash Man...will you be able to retain the bruised fender for experiments?

996 Lights are HUGE I would photo shop the idea first. They also extend into the bumper cover and the hood. I think this is a very difficult mod that will probably not turn out the way you would hope it would. Costing you more money to go back. I would say stick with 993 or 997 lights as they are round.

i think i will indeed have the old fender to play with - i'm up for trying to figure something out, but i tend to agree wtih eric about the mismatch of the 996 - i taked to kamran about this last night - we'll take a look, but i'm thinking about a different light fitting in there from an entirely different car - film at 11

For me, the last thing I would want is the 996 headlight appearance. There has to be a better (looking) way.

I think Kamran's idea is to take the lense and lamp elements out of the big housing, and affix them in the existing fender opening, with maybe a polycarbonate covering.

That holds the potential for a fine solution. If what's "behind the lens" can be transplanted (so that little things like the ability to adjust aim remain) with a 968-compatible lens, I'M READY! The only thing about my 968 that I dislike more than the on-the-lid third brake light is the pop-up headlights. IMHO, they make the car go from elegant, clean lines to Kermit.

Okay that might work! I would do the litronic lights if you can get your hands on a set. the litronic lights look better and you get the xenon benefits.

dave - he was talking bout hard mounting the lamps and then canabalising the lens

the lens will indeed by the key - the lamp by itself isn't enough - optics are a tough thing to work out - so far i haven't found a lens that focuses the beam correctly, and sits in the opeing nicely - i am pretty sure the front cover of the 996 is a focusing lens, and therefore won't work as it stands, so we're back to square one

Projection style headlights have the focusing element enclosed and therefore wouldn't need a seperate lens (ie: the focus/rx-7/wrx fixed conversions. I bought 2 low beam hella units and am in the process of mounting them in the empty sockets of my 968. (stone chips in both stock units so I figured it would be a good time to try it.) It'll be ugly as heck but I'll make some sort of flat black surround later with just the projector poking through. I spent alot of time looking at new beetles and new cooper minis trying to figure if their lights would fit but didn't want to invest in something that might now work plus most people looked at me funny when I was standing next to their new car with a tape measure. If I ever get them fitted and pretty I'll take a picture.

interesting - our foglights are projector, yet there is a lens in front of it - also, i could have sworn that the front covers on the 996 were polarized

anyway - we'll be ripping into it if my fender becomes available and see what we can come up with

someday somebody will come up with something that works and we can get rid of the mechanisms but still have the same look as stock - i definitely don't want to look into the hole and see 2 bulbs

How about some crystal clear headlight covers, and some angel-eyes.

Angel eyes are those halo-like driving lights you see on newer last generation 5-series BMW's. A ring around the actual projector lights up as driving light. It looks pretty cool from the factory on the BMW's but the aftermarket kit things you'd get at pep-boys or equivalent places look rather cheap. I don't really know much about the 996's headlight but you can buy complete DOT approved low and high beam projector modules from Hella that don't use any lens (see susquahanna-sp? motorsports' website). The ones I'm using use mounting brackets that are about 4.5-5 inches square so they fit in the socket fine. Fitting a high beam is another question but I almost never use them. It should look similar to that silver racing 968 from Australia that you see in the racing section of 968.net...hopefully at least.

thanks for clearing that up

i definitely want both low and high beams in one lamp - i like the stock "accluded" look and want to keep it, but would like the "lens" to stay down - if i can fit something behind it so i don't see the lamp, and can retain the "big eye" look of stock, then cool, but i don't want to see a "small eye" behind a clear lens

just my thing

Here are the referenced Hella's. I had it bookmarked because I plan to run 1 or 2 high beams in each "hole" under lexan covers for night racing.
