Have people ever tried that combination on 968?



I have stock 16" wheels on now. I am thinking about 225/50/16 &16x8 ET52 all around.





What do you think?

Sounds like a good set-up to me. For the life of me, I'll never understand why Porsche went with a staggered set-up on a car with a 50/50 weight distribution. If anything, I would think wider tires in the front would make more sense (at least for a car that sees track time). But the great thing about a square set-up is that you can rotate the tires all around, and really extend their life. What kind of tires are you thinking of? I was very happy with my Sumitomo HTRZIII's, especially for the price.

Ok probably dumb question, but since the correct offsets are different front to rear (52 & 65?) because the car was made for staggered, if you use 4 wheels with the same offset won't it be 'wrong' for one axle? Or if you account for different offsets then how can you rotate front to rear?

Would have to use spacers on one axle, right?

Entering the OP's info into the wheel clearance calculator, nothing changes in the back, because he's using standard size wheels there. In the front, his new wheels will move the inner edge of the tire 7 mm closer to the strut, and the outer edge 13 mm closer to the fender lip. So there would definitely be no need for spacers (I agree with Flash - I would avoid spacers if at all possible for numerous reasons). So, in addition to the other benefits of a square set-up, the OP's new set-up will fill out the front fender well nicely, and I'm sure it won't present any clearance problems.

ya know, 11 years ago, when i first [popped into the 968 world, the word was that there was nothing left on the table for power, and that porsche had done everything that could be done, and that chips were the only thing that did anything, and that was minimal. well, we all saw that one blown away with new chips and the airbox mod.



then the "experts" said that forced induction couldn't be done, and that a supercharger would never work. they said porsche would have done it if they could, and that a turbo was the only thing that stood any chance. i think we all know how that turned out.



i'm looking forward to seeing this in action. i think we have another myth about to be busted.

I ran 225s for snow tires the first year I had the car, it was "OK". Yes, they fit...

I agree with Flash: I have 225's all the way around on my 944S2 and 16x8 BBS wheels for the track with 245/45's all the way around. Never had a problem with either setup; I would have gone with 245's on the street but there basically aren't any available, at least that I could find.



Square is definitely the way to go on any 944 or 968, IMHO.

Do I sense a groundswell building? I just collected a set of 17 x 9" 996 Twists, and a set of 245/40-17 BF Goodrich G-Force Rivals are on their way from Tire Rack. I still have a few sessions left in my current tires, so it will be a few weeks before I put the new set on, but I wanted to take advantage of a $70 prepaid Visa card promotion BFG was running through this past Saturday.



I didn't do this to make my car faster, so it if does, that would be icing on the cake. I did it to stretch my consumables budget by going to less expensive tires that I could make last longer by rotating them in any combination. On the track, the fronts definitely take more of a beating than the rears, so going from an 8-1/2" wheel up front to a 9" can only help, I would assume.



Anybody interested in a pair of 17 x 7" Twists that I ended up with as extras through the wheel accumulation process? I'll post an ad soon.

I was hesitant to go this route, because I thought I'd have to buy two complete sets of staggered wheels, and then be stuck with four fronts to sell. Fortunately, I ran across two rears, and one complete set; both were local, so I went for them, and figured selling two fronts wouldn't be too terrible.



The extra fronts I have are in amazing conditions - I'll post pictures tonight. Hardly a scratch on them - I wish the four 17 x 9's I ended up with were nearly this nice! Not perfect, but they don't appear to be refinished, either. I'm thinking $300 for the two plus shipping (I've seen significantly more banged-up ones listed on eBay for more), but I don't want to store them at my house indefinitely, so if time drags on with minimal interest, I'd be open to any reasonable offers.
