1999 911 Carrera wheels on my 968. Opinions?
#1

I am thinking about putting 911 wheels on my 968. The 911 wheels are 17 inch. I did a photoshop montage in order to see what it would look like. I would like some opinions on this. Thank you so much.

I just sold a set. They will work without spacers if the offset is ET55.

Here is a pic when I had a set on my car.

If the price is right go for it. If you are paying $600 or more, IMHO, you can get better looking wheels.

If the price is right they are a great upgrade. The 16s are just too small. I went with 993 Cup wheels for an OEM look, but the twists look good as well.

You can probably get ~$500 for the 16s in Pano or on a 944 board.

I've never been a fan of the "twist"-type Porsche wheels, but it's kinda hard to go wrong upgrading from 16s to 17s. If the price is right, they fit, and you like them... go for it. The 16s are just too small for the car and the upgrade to the 17s makes it look like it should, IMHO.

I like the 16's better on my car after I lowered my ride height. Even with this adjustment, I still

prefer the look and handling of 17's. The twists are very cool and I would definately run those

for the right price.

On my car, my two different sets of tires give me VERY different looks and handling charactaristics.

My 16 OE rims have Toyo Proxes 4 tires. These are great for grocery runs and in and out of

parking lots, but they feel soft and mushy when doing spirited driving. The fronts turn very

easily though, which is why they are better for "around town". But they tend to plow when

under hard cornering, which they really can't do.

My 17" Cup II rims have Bridgestone SO-3's, which came with the car as a 2nd set when I bought her.

These have a much firmer sidewall, lower profile, and give greater performance. I can barely break the rears free even when I want to and the fronts stick fairly well, but only in warmer weather. I have run these tires and rims from Memorial Day to Labor Day only. The trade-off here is excellent performance vs. very harsh ride.

It's basically like a menu from some Chinese restaurants. You can choose "One from Column A"

or

"One from Column B"

but not both.

Cheers!

(looking at the orig post pics) The upgrade looks much better. But they look like the ones put on 986's (the box) not the 911s.

I would shoot for the 18" twist as seen in the pic above. But be warned, I heard the ride gets noticeably rougher. But that wouldnt bother me.

The early 996 had a the same twist wheel as the boxter, only difference being an offset of et 55.

I like the look of the twisties too... on the left side of the car. They look a little wierd on the right side of the car though. Almost like they're mounted backwards because of the direction of the spokes. Maybe it's just me. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/huh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I think they "fit" the look and style of the 968 and they seem to look "period correct" on a 968. I had gone through a few sets of wheels till I tried the twisties and I am satisfied with them, at least for now, though I do think I'm gonna' move to another style before long. I went ahead and paid for the hollow-spoke version in an effort to save a little unsprung weight and they perform well. The steering feels pretty nimble compared to other wheels (like the RH AG-Cup) I've had in the past.

When I move on to the next style of wheels, the twists will go up for sale.

On your picture it looks like instead of "968" it says "carrera" on your car <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/blink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> you modified it I guess?

Yep, good catch. It's kind of an inside joke. My financial planner/activities coordinator told me bluntly "No way buddy, can't do it", referring to the monetary ability at that time to purchase a 911 Carrera 4 I was so in love with back a few years ago. I still wanted an upgrade from the 944 so, I found the car you see in the picture. Long story short, I pulled the "968" script and put the "Carrera" script in its place. The first time she noticed it, she said "so I guess this a joke right, funny guy"? She calls it my "poor mans Porsche". And it kinda' stuck. It's alot of fun telling the story, especially to those who don't know anything about 968's and it always gets a laugh from those who do! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

No offense to those who own a "real" Carrera. Maybe one of these days, I'll be among those who can afford a 911. Whether or not, I'll never let go of my beloved 968. That's my baby. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/rolleyes.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

the twists really never did it for me. Not sure why.

I'm quite glad I went with 18s. Ride isn't that hard, and while it may not be ideal performance wise, they're very aesthetically pleasing.

I agree w/ saxman and biotechee.

Thin 5 spokes 17 or 18's really update the car.

Sax, Nice... really nice! My boss has a 911 with the same wheels and I wondered if they'd fit my car. Does it take any spacers to get that sweet fit??? That's looking like the way to go right there. Dang... that really looks nice. Oh and very nice pic too. Location, location, location! I wish my paint was as flawless as yours. I can't even tell if its black or blue. Veeeeery nice dude.

i love the look of the thin 5 spokes, and the weight is really good - the only thing that bugs me about them is how tiny they make the brakes look - they are so thin they expose the brakes a lot more than other wheels - still not sure i made the right move on mine

Another vote for the thin 5-spokes. Simply beautiful. Being so open also makes them very easy to clean, I bet. Does this particular style (the one on Saxman's car) only come in 18", or are they also available in 17"?
