Yet another fixed headlight post

Here is an early mockup of my enduro race setup. Two 90mm Hella brights per side. They fit quite nicely in the hole left by the headlamp. The plan is to run one on the headlight circuit and one on the fog/driving light circuit. There will also be plexiglass cover.

Eric, Looks nice, have you looked at the GM "N" headlights used for a couple of years in the late '90s? They are rectangular and could stack on eon top of another.

I'm not familiar with the "N" headlights. What cars are they on? The Hellas are available, small, affordable and brighter than the H4s. There are also a HID version available.

They were used on a small run of cars like the Pontiac Grand Prix 1995.

That looks good Gene, should save a few pounds up front with the raise/retract motors and mechanism removed. Keep us posted when you get pictures with the plexiglas covers on. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

I"m probably getting rid of my foglights, and would like to duct some fresh air.

I finally finished my headlight project. I think they turned out pretty well for a home made project and especially for a race car.



I will try them in anger this weekend at the Cascade 8 Hour Enduro in Portland.

Interesting approach - and pretty nice looking. I'd guess that this is a long way from street legal, though. Anyone know?

I don't see why it wouldn't be street legal if you went with a normal one low beam, one high beam setup. They are fully adjustable. I wired mine so there would be 2 high beams per side, obviously wouldn't work well on the street. I have one set on the fog light circuit and one set on the headlight circuit.

I'm really intrigued by this. The fact that there's no bodywork involved also means that, if desired, the car could be returned to stock headlights should that ever be desired. How complicated was the fabrication of the plexi covers? It looks like they're flat, in which case they "just" needed to be made to fit the opening properly. Is that right? Can you provide more details or photos on the method of mounting the lights?

Yes, there was no bodywork required. Just the drilling of a few holes - a couple to mount the bracket the headlights are on and a few for the cover. Returning to stock would not be a problem.



The covers are easy to make. With the headlights out and bumper cover off, you can hold a piece of cardboard up to the underside of the hole and trace out the exact shape. Transfer that to some flat stock polycarbonate or equivalant and cut.



I fabbed a bracket out of 1.5" wide aluminum flat bar, attached a piece of aluminum "L" bar to that and then the light's mounting plates mount vertically to the "L". I then cut a piece of black ABS plastic to fill the unsightly hole in front of the lights. It's not something I would do on a nice street car, but in prinicipal a nice looking setup could be made using similar techniques.



I think if I powder coat the pieces black and it will look even better.



I'll take some pictures of how it was done when I take them out.

Eric,



I would like to convert my 968 as well. Please post as much info as possible; Lights part#, man. etc.

Any tips on problems that you ran into and what you would do if you were to do it over again would be great.

I hate the way my 968 looks from the driver's view with the lights up.

I can't wait to modify mine!!

any way to get an accluded convex lens? something you can't see through to the point where you see the lights behind - something like the stock lens would be good - the fixed conversion thing is cool, but i don't like the look of twin bulbs in that opening - looks too japanese to me - just not my thing
