wing or a prayer?
#21

From the rear, it has the look of the wing on the coupe - casting a shadow on the tail panel - and we all know how you feel about coupes, Flash! With the clean-up work you've done on the rear end, and the big 285's back there, your car looks tough enough already. I vote for no wing.

Of course, with your upcoming SC mods, you'll be spending so much time north of 100 mph, you may need it!

I think of this mod in context of the other mods. So with the splitter, the roll bar, purposeful wheels, and potentially some day dual exhaust or modified headlights, the wing/spoiler might work very well, or maybe even be important to help create a visual balance among all of the modifications.

For a stock cab with no visible mods, it would probably stick out as something just tacked on without an integrated design for the whole car.

i think the design of that spoiler looks too tacked on. the side edges are too rounded making it look like a dated early 90's design. it doesn't transition smoothly from any angle of that tail.

what i think would look much better on the car is an E46 m3 style spoiler, which could update the looks of the car rather than backdating it.

it's not like i was thinking the back of the car needed anything. i like it like it is. i don't want to consider any other options.

it was merely that i had passed up on opportunities in the past to get this, and as they were becoming less frequent, i thought i would snag it and see if i liked it. i'm fine with sticking it back in the box and up into the attic, never to be seen again. i'm probably also fine with selling it.

it's still sitting on the car, and i'm still trying to get used to it. i have a few more days before i have to decide.

Adam - good call on the mini spoiler. I put one on my E36 M3 a few years back.

Good idea, plunk it on the car and walk past it a bunch of times without paying attention to it. That will tell you whether or not you really like it - you'll get a sense of it without being conscious of it.

Or, you can get one of those BMW-style spoilers on eBay for less than $25.

nope - i hate those things. to me that looks even more stuck on. lol - when we were looking at the SLK350, we were really only considering the AMG version, but told them they would have to delete that thing.

This 968 cab buyer's guide shows a car with a splitter and a wing. On that car, I think it looks good. The splitter is surely not the same, I wonder if the wing is the same?

Edit: Or maybe the resolution of the pictures is so bad that the car looks good with it?

it's odd how it goes from nice to rice depending on the angle. The one in the ad looks fine. Doesn't add much character though, so i wouldn't do it. Whenever you look at it form that odd angle it will look out of place.

note: Many of our "seasoned" cars have a cleaner engine bay then Porsche's orig ad <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.png" class="smilie" alt="" />

That is the Techart front splitter. It's a 3-piece design and is great looking in person. Unfortunately they stopped making them long ago, and I've seen one for sale a few years ago (I think in the $1500 range). The rear spoiler is the same Techart design that Bob has on his car.

hmmm - i guess that one is in the eye of the beholder. i had one for about a minute. looked non-funcitonal and stuck on to me.

it was a convoluted multi-piece design. the only advantage that i saw was that it, like the splitter i make, was a wrap-around design, which would allow it to "skip" over things. it also did not stick out very far, which would promote longevity. it was also ABS, or some such material, so it would definitely fare well on impact.

the one i have for the rear is the tech art.

FYI: Porscheshop.co.uk seems to have that same style wing for sale at 175 GBP. Given the state of the British economy these days, thats less than $300 USD.

They also have a front splitter for sale there, but don't offer very detailed info about it...

i think that one is plastic, and not the more flexible material the tech art unit is. not sure.

by the time you get it here though, you can be sure the price is considerably higher than that.

Sorry, but no matter how integrated or " factory " this wing may look, you're turning a car that can still pass for a 2012 model into one that belongs in the '80s.. The wing is essential aesthetically on the hatchback , not so on the cab. IMHO.

Sorry, but I'd pass on it. Doesn't look good on a cab. I've seen very few aftermarket body parts which look right on any kind of car, no matter what you think initially...

not only do i think it dates the car, but i think it also makes it look like a ricer

not sure if i'm selling it or not, but it's going back in the box today

Whether you like this particular iteration or not, I still think the cab needs *something* back there.
