Windshield Wiper Arms
#21

"start the drive back with the trip meter at "0". " Whatever you do don't reset the the trip odometer while the car is in motion because it will bugger up the gears that drive the main odometer causing it to fail. Why would anyone come up with a trip odometer that can't be reset un the fly.

Chris:

You sound like a man who, unfortunately, knows this from experience. Thanks for the warning as I'm certain I would have done this sooner or later.

Although I read that for years especially about the 944, I recently read somewhere (where they were selling some replacement gears and where they attributed that same wisdom as partial myth) that the original material used for the gears reacts with the adhesive or lubricant used on said gears and swells up over time and just turns to poo, strips and/or falls off the shaft. The new gears were made of stiffer stuff.

OEM gears and they work fine. No poo here.

Poo here, Having my odometer gears replaced and a bunch of other things sorted out with my 968 this week (Dont Press That Button While In Motion!!). After that I will install my Design 1 Racing SC kit when it arrives. My mechanic was skeptical about the SC kit, I told him it was "sorted out" but he was still skeptical. He said he has installed many SC kits on 968's. Maybe my second part of this post belongs in another thread. Anyway the origin of all this work came from an expired inpection.$$$

Can someone provide some help with my front wipers? They have stopped returning the bottom of windshield area when turned off. The wipers function fine when turned on. I did a few searches on the forum and looked through the workshop pfd and Clark's garage; did not see see anything relavant.

Thanks,

Marty

I agree - the wiper arms do stick up rather high. Noticed it right away when I got my car.

I agree, even when properly adjusted ala Flash, it may have something to do with our height. I'm 5ft/10-11"ish and also because I have a Sport there is no height adjustment to the seat. Couple that with a low legs forward driving position and a low swoopng bonnet(hood!) then the wiper arms are very "in your face." Try this, sit in your car and have a pal at the front of your car drawing there finger forward on the hood and watch for the tip of there finger disappearing out of sight then shout " stop there". get out and check where that point is. Gauranteed its about 15 to18" from the front of the car! Whoops, just checked with the help of a freind ( thanks Lynda!) and the distance is for me a whopping 30" to the front! I'm going to buy a second hand pair of arms, re-work them and give you all the verdict and maybe photos as well. But don't hold your breath this is not a quick project. I'm not His Flashness when it comes to instant renovations! But it will get done! Eventually!

i had to go down to be sure i wasn't nuts or remembering wrong, because i've never had a problem with the wiper arms being in my way

sure enough, i can't even see them from my seating position - the steering wheel blocks the driver side arm from being visible

i snapped a couple of shots and put the camera right in front of my face so i could see my eyes in the refection of the screen

this is my view:

How tall are you Flash? Do you have your seat height jacked up. The view in the photo is that of someone vertically challenged! I've noticed your wipers sit well down into the dark area of glass at the windscreen base , maybe that's the secret!

PS Flash, could you post another photo looking into your cab from the front so we can all get an idea of the ideal line. Ta.

He is vertically challenged, at least when me and my son stand next to him <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.png" class="smilie" alt="" /> He has Recaro seat which might lower his butt a bit as well?

if i were to sit higher, it would only make the arms even less of an issue, as they would drop down even lower into the relative field of view

the car is REALLY dirty, as i got caught in freak thunderstorm on the day i went out to work on the chassis braces, but here is a shot of them from the front:

Apologies your Flashness, I'm the short arse! Sitting in the car this morning at work and I tried lifting my butt of the seat a few inches, what a difference, I can see more hood! My wipers are pretty much as yours position wise so I don't understand how they do not spoil your field of view. My fixed height Sport seat is approx 5.5" from the carpet to the piping round the seat edge, about 6.8 to 7" height to where my posterior resides. Have ordered Aero wiper blades to see if it helps any with my cluttered view. We get plenty rain so finding out if their okay will not take very long! Might do a project to add lift to my driver seat, it would probably help my left knee at the same time. Sorted!

i'm pretty short, especially in the back. i sit pretty low too, having made custom blocks for the recaros i have. it just happens that the wheel and the wiper arm line up. i can see right through the rest of the arm, as well as the passenger side one. they just don't really fall into my line of sight. maybe i'm just used to them? maybe they are a bit flatter? mine are a bit different than stock (note the aero foils on the leading edges)

if i sit up a bit, i get more hood, and therefore the arms fall lower into the field, becoming even less of an issue

i don't know how better to explain it

Sorry Flash, as soon as I saw the words "custom blocks" I thought of Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom! Driving the car with pedal blocks! Anyway, fitted new aero wiper blades, definite improvement. can see the driver side windscreen washer staring at me now! I guess I'm at a bad height, just tall enough to get this blocked vision. But the hood is becoming more visible as well. Next step, make wiper arms that sit down low and lie below the wiper blade then come up at right angles more or less right at the joining area to the wiper. I think they would interfere with the hood if you lift them off in the park position to change wiper blades so I envisage care required when doing that. Fine!

Have you tried raising your seatback up. I am shorter than Flash and don't have this problem.

Just a side note...

When I was doing the WD40 seat switch clean DIY, I decided to set the seat in the mid position for ALL adjustments except distance from the pedals.

I was very surprised to find that starting at the mid position, and making slight tweaks, gave me a more comfortable seating position overall. I am 5'10" tall.

My assumption was that the engineers designed the center position of all seat adjustments for a "normal" sized driver.

Try it.
