another fun day at flash's
#1

aahz made it down to my place yesterday - very cool guy - looking forward to seeing him at our local events

i had been eagerly awaiting this one - it isn't often you see an adventurine green car, and even less often you see the font emblazoned cloth seats

first, i just have to say, this was a very cool car - it is going to clean up very nicely - at first glance you see a nice clean straight deep rich green car - then you start looking more closely and you see how great the interior looks against that color - the cloth with the fonts really set it off too - they weren't the sport seats, like in pete's silver bullet, but they were really nice, and very clean

then you start poking around in the car, and find that not only is it a low mileage car, but it has been pretty darned well maintained - not a drop of a leak anywhere the entire time it was in my garage - car ran strong and smooth too - clutch was the firmest stock clutch i've felt yet - very nice - it has konis in the rear that, at the time of alignment will get reset to a slightly firmer setting - all the bushings felt good - he's already gone through the hydraulics - this is going to be a good car - he paid a premium for it, but he got a good one

he already has the mod bug too - we did the airbox mod, and he's hooked - woohoo - dialed in a few little things and tweaks, and he drove away happy and ready to get on to the next upgrade

ether joe popped down to join us, since his car is sitting in santa barbara with what is likely blown hydraulics - always good to see him - looking forward to having some driving events so we can get out and play

at first i thought it was weird was it that both of these guys had the same major problem less than 2 weeks apart, but then i started thinking about it, and realized that there have been quite a few of these lately, and really none 2 years ago - an age thing

everybody had better start taking a good long look at theirs

all in all a great day - got to hang out with friends, tinker on a cool car, and drink cold beer

i had fun

What specifically do you mean by 'blown hydraulics?'

Now wanting to put words in flash's mouth but I believe he is talking about the clutch hose and the brake hoses. After 10-12 years, these hoses are wearing out and bursting when put under pressure one too many times. My 968 is up on my lift right now for replacement of its clutch hose, which I decided to replace before it stranded me on the side of the road somewhere.

Yep, the clutch hydraulics. The day after I drove my car back, my clutch pedal disappeared while in traffic on I405 (returning from selling my old car).

Many, many thanks to flash, an incredibly helpful guy. I had a lot of fun hanging out with him and ether joe.

After spending almost as much on mods as I paid for my previous GTI, I decided that I would keep the 968 mostly stock. Hah!

I was even reconsidering doing the airbox mod, but said 'what the heck' as flash popped open my hood. Wow, that really makes a big difference. I thought the car felt a little strangled below 3500 - this knocked that right out.

So, now I have to call Pete to get a chip, get a 930 steering wheel and european turn signals - for starters.

Gee, thanks flash <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I thought that might be it. I replaced mine over the winter after a similar adventure - luckily not on the 405!

Last fall I had the same problem, the clutch was suddenly dead and it proved to be the hose.

Thanks to my automobile club card a temporary fix was done and I could drive home with just a few hours of delay.

My name is Mick Trimming and am the proud new owner of a black '92 968 with tan/black interior, all stock, that I purchased from a private owner in Colo Springs, CO and drove it down to Phoenix a few months back. I had some basic maintenance done at a small shop there that does just terrific work and I trust them implicitly. I emailed you a couple of times before getting the car and have just been thrilled with it. Anyway, I recently transferred out to UCLA for 3 more years of residency and would like to get involved here in So Cal with other 968 enthusiasts and find a good, trustworthy and thorough mechanic like I had in Phx. If I remember correctly you are in So Cal as well and I was hoping to hook up with some other owners, check out what they've done and pick up a few pointers here and there. Anyway, any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Enjoy the 4th! Best,

Mick

the first thing you need to do is come out to our gathering on the 8th - so far, it looks like a dozen 968s

go to the events section and see "funrun"
