wider tires/lower profile

cosimo, I'm getting them installed later today. What was a good pressure for the 225/245 16" Toyos? Still 36 at that size?

I thought about this question for several months and talked to a bunch of knowlegable Porsche/tire guys. One of them works almost exclusively doing tires and suspension work for PCA Club Racing cars. After all of this I put a set of RE 750s on my 16" OEM rims and stuck with the OEM 205/225 setup. Most of the concerns I heard, and ultimately listened to, concerned going outside of the original Porsche specs for the 16" rims and possibly weakening the bead and sidewall due to the slight bulge over the rim from the larger tires. What I was told again and again were two things:

1. Going to 225/245 was only a cosmetic gain and could compromise handling.

2. If you want bigger tires to fill out the wheel wells - my original goal - get 17" rims. Upsizing tires is not a wise course of action.

I probably spent far too much time researching this. One problem I kept running in to was that 245/16s are not easy to find and really cut down on my tire choices.

So far I love the RE 750s but after a whole 40 miles I will reserve judgement. I wish Tire Rack would delete all reviews under 5000 miles!

Mitch, I did not have the Toyos with the 16s. They were Yokos. I love speaking Japanese. Anyway, 36 psi was what I ran on the 16s. A little less for the track (DE). My mechanic recommended the Toyos when I went to the 17. In addition, to being a great wrencher on 968s (he prepared Gary Grigsby's 968), he is a hell of a track driver. So, I trust his recommendations. Buona Fortuna.

Thanks....I guess I was just wondering if the pressure needs to be adjusted from stock when going with non-stock sized tires. The tires I'm replacing were 205/55 and 245/45 and have wear that might indication incorrect inflation. The fronts were more worn on the edges (inside and outside) and the rears are most worn in the middle. I guess that would that mean I should have gone with more pressure in front and less in the rear with those. I always kept the pressure close to 36 or within 1 or 2 less than that.
