When I bought my car nearly seven years ago, the previous owner told me the car was fitted with M030 sway bars, so that's what I thought all this time. But I recently met with the guy who installed most of the upgrades on my car, including the sway bars, and he said no, it had M030's before, but he removed then, and installed something called Porsche Cup bars, which were hard to find, and quite expensive. My front bar is 32 mm in diameter, and the rear is 20 mm. So which bars are they? Thanks.

I was talking to RS Barn about swaybar upgrades (mine are stock, non-MO30). Do the thicker bars compromise the ride at all or does it just feel more planted on corners?

as long as you realize that you need to match the sway bars to the springs, or the car will skate like it's on marbles, and also realize that the matching stiffer springs and matching shocks for them are what will make the ride quality determination, "compromise" is a subjective thing



bottom line, set up right, yes, it will definitely be firmer



to run a 32mm front bar, and a 20 rear (i have a 32 front and a 22 rear) you need at least 300# springs up front with adjustable struts, and matching (balanced) rear wheel rate with adjustable shocks

Do you mean you've never seen a 32 mm cup bar?



So, what exactly are the diameters of the front and rear M030 bars? Thanks.

yup - that's what i wanted - i couldn't find that one existed anywhere - so, i worked out the torsional specs, determined the material, drew it up, and had it made - works great with my setup!

Interesting - so apparently the guy who installed the bars in my car was right. I'll have to update my signature, and my ad. The previous owner also said the car has 250 lb front springs, but who knows if he's right about that as well. I understand the mind-boggling complexity of getting the combination of springs, struts, sway bars, tires, chassis stiffening, alignment, etc., to all work in harmony. All I can say is, I've experienced many times heading into a series of turns with a faster car in hot pursuit, and having every intention of letting him pass after completing the turns, only to find him nowhere in sight after dancing through the turns, so whatever the guy who set up my suspension did, he seems to have done a pretty decent job.

i don't know that he is right or wrong - i haven't seen the bars in your car - i've never heard of a 32mm bar being available for this car, which is exactly why i had one made

The guy who put them in what was probably eight or nine years ago told me they weren't easy to find, and that they were pretty expensive. It wouldn't surprise me if they're no longer available, which fits with your experience. But he was very adamant when I talked to him a few days ago that they weren't M030's, but that they were Porsche Cup bars.



I'd be glad to snap some pics, but I won't be able to do it till after Christmas. I'll see if I can read a part number as well.

968 M030 Bars are 30MM Front/19MM 3-Way Adjustable Rear

951 Cup Sway bars are 30MM Front/21MM 3-Way Adjustable Rear.



The 951 Rear is the biggest factory Rear made for our cars, the 968 Front is Hollow if i'm not mistaken and the 951 Cup Front bar is not. So up front, the best bar would be the 968 M030 Bar. It's the same size, only lighter.



I almost purchased a 951 Cup bar for the rear of my car, but ended up with a Lyndsey Racing 19MM 5-Way Adjustable Rear Sway & an OEM 968 30MM M030 Bar up front.



If your Sways measure 32MM & 20MM they arnt Cup bars. 32 is too big and 20 is too small.



a 21MM rear bar set to the softest setting is still stiffer then the OEM 19MM bar set to the stiffest setting. The 21MM Cup bar has been NLA for over 10 years now. They are very hard to find.

I had M030 suspension with set of 951 Cup Sway's on my '87 944 8V. The car was ordered that way from the factory. Wish i had pulled them off and kept them. The rear sway retailed for close to $600 when it was available over 10 years ago. Now they are nearly impossible to find.

yeah - the Cup bar set is pretty much unobtanium, but in other conversations, i was also of the impression that they were 30 and 21 - could be a bit sketchy in the rear if you didn't have the setup for it, but very cool if you did

There may be a little error in my measurements, since the battery in my digital calipers died, so I had to use a ruler to measure the caliper opening after using it on the bars. I'm pretty sure the front is 32 mm, but I'm not as confident in the measurement of the rear. Oh, and I forget to mention, but the back bar is 3-way adjustable. I had the front bar off a few years ago when I replaced my engine mounts, and judging by the weight, I don't think it's hollow. I'll replace the battery in my calipers, get more accurate measurements, snap some pictures, and try to find a part number. But as I said, I'm not going to be able to do this for a few days. I'm suddenly very curious as to what I have, and hopefully we can unravel the mystery in a few days.

Fox - just curious if you know how the Lindsey Racing 19mm 5- way adjustable rear sway you have is different (better, I presume, or you would not have it) than the M030 19mm bar. I run the M030 sways.

Scott, The Lyndsey Racing rear Sway bar is a clone of the M030 Rear sway bar with the addition of 2 more adjustments/settings. 1 Stiffer, and 1 softer. Its cheaper then an M030 rear Sway to boot. It was a no brainer to me.



I found a set of 951 Cup bars for sale and tried to get the rear bar, but the seller did not really wish to split the front/rear bars unless he had a buyer for just the front. I should have bought both and just sold the front 30MM on ebay or at the next swap meet.

Well, being Christmas, I don't think I will find a store where I can get a replacement battery for my electronic calipers. Also, I don't think a picture of the sway bars would be terribly enlightening, so I'm trying to find a part number. Does anybody know where the part number would likely be stamped? I looked around the front bar last night, and wasn't able to see one. Thanks.
