Wheel Locks

I lost the key...Long nasty story...Girlfriend stopping by...quick rush to clean place...had 5 small bags of garbage in my hands...and my keys...locked front door...threw away garbage bags in huge dumpster...walked to the car and notice I no longer had my keys...(I went thru it 4 times before the truck came by to empty the dumpster...(that was the nasty part))



$75.00 later I have a new master key with a cute little light on it...what a rip off.



But the Wheel Lock Key has been discontinue...Porsche dealer want $75 to replace the locks and that not counting the labor to remove the locks, (I know it must be quite a bit cause they referred me to Good Year before they told me they can remove them).



Good Year want $80.00 to remove them.



Just curious...Has anyone removed them without the key?



If you count the 4 day rent-a-car $120 (Local Porsche Dealer never has anything on stock). The total of my Cleanup for my now ex-girlfriend is:



$75 + $120 + $80 = $275.



At this point if I can save $80..I be a little bit happier.

i presume these are the original early style locks?



i'd try another dealer - they should have a master key set, and it should not cost you anything to remove only the locks



failing that, how about a locksmith? - the early ones are a rather normal key, and the lock should be pickable



before you go that route though, take a good look inside the cover for the owner's manual - the car came with 2 keys - usually there is one tucked away inside there



then, get rid of them - locks are a bad idea anyway

Do you know the key number for your locks? I have a set of keys that I would be happy to send you if they are the right ones.

I just drilled out the center of the locks and the head that rotates comes right off. I reinstalled 4 regular lug nuts after that. Found no need to replace the locks and saved some cash.

Yes they are the original locks...If there is a key tucked away in that car I am going to have a talk with Porsche dealer..He was pushing for me to buy a new set of wheel locks, and never mention a second possibly hidden in the car. Unfortunatly for me, I live where there is only one Porsche Dealership...so you can imagine how cocky they are, and how short they can be with answers that may lead them to lose a sale or service. Just to get a new master key...I had to bring in the title, Driver ID, Registration and Insurance papers weren't good enough. Then had to wait 5 days to get the key, which is only open between the hours of 8-5 Monday thru Friday. Let just say...Customer Service doesn't apply to anyone who didn't purchase a Porsche from them. As far as I know they have no 968 parts on stock...I had to go to Checkers to get a Distibutor Cap, at half the price. I am learning "Bosch" parts are the brand to ask for and they are the easiest parts for me to get from different Auto Parts Stores in my area.

That was my original thought...but I wasn't sure it can be done...easily and safely. I'm going to try it as a last option before forking over $80.00. Thanks.

i'd seriously consult a locksmith - they should be able to pick it - they won't know what you are talking about though unless you show it to them

Nope nothing there...empty sleeve where it probably was at one time...But thanks anyways...I appreiate the help...Next...Locksmith -> Drill -> Goodyear

I would second trying to pick them. It's a handy skill to learn anyways. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

A "quick pick" would probably be all you need along with an hours patients for the 4.

Would it be cost effective to hire a locksmith? At least not where I live. It would probably be cheaper to remove/drill out the tumbler and buy new locks if you really need them.

i have some extra keys for my car as well, that i can only imagine would go to the wheel locks which i don't even have.



i'd be happy to just mail them to you if it would help. certainly no reason i'd ever need them again.

Uh-replacement locking lug nut set $65.00 and drilling out existing locks- 1/2hr. max. vs $80/hr.for locksmith, time to bring car to locksmith, time to wait for locksmith- I would say at least 2 hours between waitng and travel. Or replacement lug nuts, I paid $8ea. from dealer since I felt nobody would want to steal my 16 year old wheels anyways. Do the math.

was this quote over the phone? they may have been thinkng about standard lug locks - these are a a bit tougher to drill

I went through this 2 years ago when I bought my car, - no key. I called the locksmith and he gave me a guess-timate, also suggested that I just remove/break existing locks and replace with new ones. He felt it would be cheaper and he was right. I just chose to use conventional lugs afterwards. Replacement lock kits are available thru parts wholesale companies, just search the web. Just to make sure, we are talking about the lock with the key and not the lugs with the socket adapter, correct?

Well this should be the conclusion of this thread...



This morning I decided to let Goodyear handle it, because one of tires is completely bald, and it been rainy here for 2 days straight...and I can feel the car sliding when I go thru big water spots on the Highway...I figure my life was worth $80...They gave me a quote of $15 a wheel, instead of the $20/wheel they gave me over the phone. So I figure for $60 and I will done with it....



Wrong!!!



Two hours later I get a call from Goodyear...They want $45 per wheel and they want me to sign a waiver for any demage they do to the rims. Apparently their little Wheel Lock remover can't fit over the socket the lug nuts sit in.



I called 5-8 locksmith in my area and none of them want anything to do with it...even though I explained it was a key lock not a socket wheel lock.



During lunch...I went over to GoodYear..told them I be back in an hour...then went over to Wal-Mart bought a $10.94 cordless drill with bit...(awesome little thang that runs on 4 double AA batteries)...sat down on a curb and drill off the Wheel Lock...No Demage to the rim. Return back to GoodYear and got the new tire put on.



My advice to anyone who has a simliar problem...Drill it out...bascially drilling off the cap part that is cast iron and the rest will fall off. The wheel lock is basically made of three parts...the cast Iron part is easy to drill off, (it surround the middle key hole area which is steel) both make up the top or cap of the wheel lock...the third part is steel it the part that surround the lugnut.



I still have 3 more to take off...so if you can loan me the key that would be cool...I'll keep my handy new drill in the trunk just in case I need to take the lock off before it arrives.
