Wheel lock question

I'd like to get a set of wheel locks just to create a bit of extra inertia for a would-be thief (other than the fact that there are maybe three cars on earth, all Porsches, according to the place I bought my tires, that have wheel mounting hole pattern that matches a 968, rendering the wheels practically worthless to any thief who knows his market), so I marched into my local Autozone, expecting to be able to buy something off the rack. Not so fast, brake dust breath. Of course, the lugs that fit a 968 are oddballs that practically no other cars use, I've learned.



So, what to do? Does anybody know of a place that carries wheel locks that will work on a 968? Does the fact that I have aftermarket wheels (18" Enkei NT03's) make any difference? Given the marginal protection they provide, I really don't want to spend an arm and a leg for them. I remember Flash had a set for sale awhile back. Flash, if you still have them, I'd like to buy them. Thanks.

I've got a set I'm not using, since I switched to steel lug nuts. Have all the caps, too.

yeah - pretty sure i've still got them.



however, i do NOT recommend them for a track car. at least, be sure to remove them and replace them with steel lugs for track use. many sanctioning bodies won't allow any locks or aluminum nuts for very good reasons

Could you use the porsche aluminium locking lugs in combination with steel? I've got an extra set as well; 993 part number with four locking lugs and the key.

not in any of the groups i ran with. all steel only. aluminum does not retain its ability to hold torque as long as steel. generally you lose some of that after about 25 on and offs. since you pull the wheels on a track car after every track day for normal inspections, it doesn't take long before the aluminum lugs become dangerous.

The recommendation to use steel lugs makes sense, but I've never seen anybody pulling their wheels off for inspection at any track event I've ever participated in. Not saying it's a bad idea, just that I've never seen it done.



Any idea where to get some steel lug nuts that will work on this car? Anybody have some they'd like to sell me? Thanks.

no - i'm talking about inspection after the fact. every serious track guy i know takes the car home and gives it a thorough going over after each event. that's what prevents failures and problems.



wheel enhancement carries the lugs.

Cloud I picked up a set of gloss black steel lug nuts off of eBay a while back. Don't remember the exact price but it was decent and the quality of the finish is great. The seller might still have some up there - take a look and compare.

Are the lugs used on the 968 identical to those used on 911's of the same general era?

Yes, they were not listed as 944 or 968 specific. I believe all standard Porsche lug nuts are the same size/thread.

Price varies a lot. They are on there for $100 now, but they were $50 or so before. Here's a set for about $50...

um.............perhaps longest single span, but mine sits for months at a time, every year. i drove it a lot in the first year i owned it, but in the 8 years since, and up until i got into the supercharger, i think i averaged a dozen days a year at best, and even then, it was down for months again with the new engine.

Yeah, maybe you hold the record for overall downtime. But I wonder if there has ever been a 968 that had been on jackstands for as many consecutive months as mine was. It feels SO good to drive it again, even with the track-oriented ride.

Yeah but there's a difference between having a dead 968 and fully functional one you just don't have time to drive!



It's been since November of last year. I'm looking into a new shop that can hopefully finish the work that my repair guy started but can't continue due to a hand injury - he doesn't know when he'll be back in action. Going to have to take the 'regular' car to Monterey next week for car week. Yeah yeah, first world problems!

I wouldn't bother with wheel locks. Wheels are very rarely stolen these days. If they are put on wrong it's a real PAIN to get them off. Ask me how I know. If you lose the wheel lock nut your stuck.Not worth the hassle.

Yeah, I've debated this quite a bit. My feeling is that any knowledgeable thief (and therefore someone who could easily defeat a set of wheel locks) who knows their market should know that wheels that fit on a 968 fit on practically no other cars, and are therefore worthless to him. But I do worry that an idiot thief who just thinks my wheels look cool (and they're very nice, and very expensive, Enkei NT03's), and might be tempted by them would be deterred by the wheel locks. Not that I park it in a lot of areas where thieves lurk, but since I'm the first one who leave in the morning every other day, I do need to leave it out overnight a couple of times a week, and a Cadillac just down the street just had its wheels stolen.
