Wheel Fitment Check
#1

Anyone have comment on the ability to fit 16" 944 Turbo wheels on a stock (non-M030) 968, front offset ET60 and rear ET65?

Also, a general question: do lower numbered offsets result in the wheel sticking out farther, and higher numbers mounting deeper in the wheel well?

yes, the lower the number the farther outside the wheel sticks

i think they will fit, - how wide?

Ave, what year is the 944 turbo that these wheels came off of? If it was the 1986 then they will not fit. 1987 and later 944 turbo wheels will fit the 968 because they had the ABS brakes like the 968 has. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

Those offsets will fit. They will tuck the tires inside the fenders a bit more than stock 968 16" specs , which are 55 front and 52 rear.

Thanks for the info. IIRC they're off an 88 or 89 turbo. 7" and 9".

i am curious why you would want to put those on the car - the styling of those wheels is rather at odds with the car, having a rather dated look about them, while our cars still look current - also, the offset would be pushing the already small looking tires farther inward, making them look even smaller - i had commented that i thought they would look goofy, but that got edited, so i thought i would elaborate a little more - is this for winter tires or something like that?

No problem - you can call it as you see it: "goofy". I have thick skin. Based on these offsets, I tend to agree, which is why I am passing on these.

The long story is that I am entering some DE events this year (see my "Helmet Advice" thread under the Racing section) and I want to return to the stock 16" tire sizes. I have 17" cup 1's on now. I want to do this as cheaply as possible. Since I am considering refinishing the original 16" wheels and putting them away for safekeeping, I am looking at used 944 wheels so I wouldn't mark up the re-finish job on the originals. Having decent used tires already mounted on the 944 rims was an attraction as well, but this set is not going to work for me. Also looking at design 90's, which have offsets closer to the 968's. Eventually, I may just have to forego re-finishing for now and use my stock 16" originals.

So why run 16" at the DE events? Because I want to run as close to stock as possible while I am learning better driving techniques, and then begin some performance mods after my driving skills have improved. And because I want to.

certainly wasn't making and crass remarks and yes, was just offering an opinon

the 17s are stock too - does it make a class change by running them? i'm not sure i understand why you wouldn't want to learn on those, other than maybe saving money on tires while you learn - i tend to like to learn a car with it set up as close as i can get it to the condition in which it will be run - if this is your first experience on the track though, i can certainly understnd the desire to conserve money, learn technique, and not worry about car prep - i would do that before mods too - i guess i'm just not considering the stock 17s as a mod

Just to be clear - I had the same thought as you on the "goofy" offsets, so I did not take your opinion as crass in any way. Besides, what value would this site be to less experienced guys like me, if you more experienced (older?) guys did not express your honest opinions?

My car came with stock 16"'s. The 17"'s I have mounted now are in good shape with new rubber, so I am wanting to spare the wear and tear on this set. I can change to the 16" set just for DE, and back to 17" when I get home.

Cost is also a consideration. I can tear up decent sets of used 16" tires on the track and feel better about it - they are cheaper and easier to find than the 17" counterparts.

since i failed to say it before, good on ya for geting out on the track and learning

your points are absolutely valid - 16s are generally cheaper than 17s - learning on tires that generally won't let you go as fast is safer for sure - i think you will very quickly find that you want the extra handling the 17s give you, and will likely fall into the same boat as the rest of us and bite the bullet

have fun though in the meantime and keep the shiny side up
