wheel caps touch up paint
#1

Some of the paint ( a small segment ) on one of my center caps has flaked away and I'm trying to figure out where I can buy a touch up paint tube or can to fix the spot . The dealer does not have touch up paints for wheels, I can't find anything in auto parts stores which matches that color shade exactly, the Wurth paint I found online may work for the wheels but the caps' silver color is a bit different. I'd even buy a new cap but 1) the spot is pretty small so it can be easily touched up provided I find the paint, 2) I'm not sure I can even find that type of cap anymore - these are the ones held in place by three inside screws and the colored crest part is smaller than the "standard" size, and the crests are also convex with a brilliant
( cloisonne-like ) laqueur finish to them.. 3) IIRC, these particular ones were pretty expensive as in.. $80 or $90 EACH..

so any idea about where to look for touch up color ?

Dan,
I found that the best thing was to shoot all 4 caps in Wurth wheel color.

thanks, I may have to do that after all, but I must remove the wheels to get the caps out so will probably do it when I buy new tires in a week or two.

If your caps have 2 holes in them they can be removed with a large paper clip bent with a 90 degree bend in it; or use an allen wrench, stick one small enough through the hole on the wheel cap and pull off. Just pull them out, they pop right back in.

I cut up a coat hanger and made a "U" shape then bent the ends at about a 15 degree angle. Split into the holes and pull, Voila! Also went to a hobby shop and bought paint to match my wheel centres. Used a very fine model brush and a head mounted stereoscopic magnifier to repair my caps. All you need is a steady hand

No, these are not the ones with holes. the only way to take them off / put them back on is with the wheel off the car - there are three screws and nuts
mounted at equal distance from eachother in the lip of the caps protruding trough that lip and when tightened, they push against the inside of the wheel rim where the cap's lip fits . The resulting pressure keeps the caps in place so well, no device from the outside can be used to remove them.
Guess they designed it that way to prevent someone stealing nearly $ 400 worth of center caps.

Bummer. OEM caps all have holes. Seems like a lot of work, but $400 is a lot of money to loose to a kid who wants something to hang around his neck. Last summer we had every Honda emblem popped off of all of the cars that were left outside in my neighborhood.

Just to confirm, Wurth silver paint is the OEM for the 993 Cup wheels , correct ? Looks like my cap color is not just very close to, but actually identical to the wheel color. Only asking because 1Z makes silver wheel paint which claims to be Porsche OEM.. so wanted to make sure I get the right brand

Not sure if they all have holes-mine are painted crests, and no holes.

Not true. There are several different types, all OEM. Most 944/968 wheels I have seen do not have holes.

Wurth silver wheel paint is a match for 993 Cup wheels. I made the mistake of using a US manufacturer silver wheel paint the first time. Not even close.

No Holes in mine...'94 16" stock wheels.

I bought a set off of e-bay a while back for $85

Be aware that I bought Wurth to touch up my C2 rims on a '93 968 and the colour did not match. It matched perfectly on my '89 944 S2 though.
I ended up fixing my PO rim rash and having them all painted along with the caps to match! I'm so excited as I pick them up today after work

They look like I just drove out of the ZF showroom. I'll take a pic this weekend when my spoliler comes back from paint as well!

Here's my new wheels back from paint. Not much to see except the fact that all the rim rash is gone! I had the cap paintede as well to match as the grey was a bit off
I just finished wet sanding and cut polishing my spoiler that came back as well, oooo perdy!
