Whats your favorite car smell
#1

I'll start by saying that I personally don't like things hanging from my mirror. So I don't subscribe to pine trees and such. A buddy of mine uses cologne, not the kind made for cars either. Smells like a Abercrombie and Fitch in there. Not sure if its long lasting or if he just uses way too much. I suppose both are better then getting into a smelly car.

Point being I think many find it difficult to find the perfect balance. So I'm listing what I have found to be the perfect balance. After trying many different sprays and shampoos. I found a system that delivered a clean fresh scent without overpowering the passenger or driver. It just refreshing.

Step 1- Begin with a good wipe down and vacuum.

Step 2- Shampoo the carpet with Autoglym intr shampoo (it has a deodorizer that works well) Use this on the dash as well.

Step 3 -Treat the seats with "Leather in a bottle".

Step 4- a light mist of NewCar scent in the hatch area.

The scent is very rewarding. Problem is it only last 2 weeks.

here's a simple one that is an old used car dealer trick, and last for about 3-4 months:

stuff a couple of dryer sheets (pick your scent) into the underside of the seats - there are lots of things to grab them, so they'll stay there

My wife does that. Actually she does it all over the house. Under seat cushions, between mattresses, in sock drawers.

My favorite car smell? New car - as in the one in the showroom! There is nothing that duplicates that!

I’ve come to find that smell to be mostly carpet. We redesigned my daughter’s bedroom and added wall to wall carpet. When the install was done my wife and I both made the same comment. "it smells like a new car". That smell lingered for months.

So I’ve found that the carpet is the most dominant scent in a car.

Doesn't matter where it comes from, it's still new car smell!!

In all seriousness, my 968 has this wonderful "German leather" smell (and my car is partial leather) that is because of the seats. I know this because when I removed the seats to do a full carpet clean the smell dissappeared - interior basically had no aroma at all. A day after putting the seats back in the aroma was back and I have since had the seats out again with the same result.

I know of the dryer sheet results (I'm a car dealer) but am curious - are you trying to change the aroma of the interior?

I never looked at it that way. I don't know that its possible.

My car doesn't have much of a smell at all. There is a bit of a chemical smell in there and when hot you can really smell the leather baking.

I was just curious. I love the aroma of my car and wouldn't want to mask it with anything.

I do know the chemical smell you are referring to. A lot of cars at the auction have had carpets shampooed to the extreme and have that smell especially when they bake in the sun. Sometimes takes years to go away. And I agree, anything fabric or carpet in the car will produce (or trap - as in smoke, pet, mildew, etc) the predominate smell.

Ya know my house has a smell as well. Really noticeable in the summer when the sun has been cooking the drywall. Its kinda a saw dust smell. Doesn't stink doesn't smell good, just a distinctive scent. Air fresheners and candles can only mask the scent . After all, these materials make up the house. It smelled this way before we moved in when the place was empty.

So I think the same is true with my 68. So I guess all I can do is mask it with detergents and deodorizers.

If you can park it for a couple of days take out the seats and store them somewhere. I'm curious to see if your smell is in seats or carpet. My "German leather" aroma leaves when the seats are out leaving the car with no distinguishable scent. Obviously the summer is a much better season to determine this. FORTUNATELY, we don't have odor absorbing headliners or door panels in our cars.

My favorite car smell is slightly cooked tire rubber, followed by overheated exhaust metal. Second to last on my list is burned clutch, followed only by trans lube that leaked onto the housing. Perhaps a bit OT but you asked...

rxter "cracks" me up! lol

I sometimes make the mistake of reading some of these postings out load to my wife, and she just does NOT get it. Worse, she wonders what kind of "strange group" I'm hanging out with!

What does my car smell like? The leather sure does contribute and I am glad that there is no moisture to affect the smell. My daughters Miata is a mould bucket at this time of the year, and I make sure she cleans the underside of her soft top with a deteregent on a regular basis! The 968 "german weave" soft top is WAY better and probably helps keep the smell in the acceptable range.

Definitely the Porsche leather smell. At least in cars 10+ years older, there seems to be a very distinctive leather smell. Always brings a smile to my face.

While I have never purchased this, I have always been curious as to how much R&D went into this product:

Cool ! As long as it does not also leave glitter all over the seats and you have to explain that to your spouse.. What ?! I READ that's what they often use and that it rubs off ( pardon the pun ) on some patrons..

Be careful with the new car smell, it can cause problems, or perhaps make an excellent legal defense.

New Car Smell Blamed in Hit-and-Run

The “new car smell” from a month-old Mercedes-Benz may have contributed to Mr. Erzinger’s losing consciousness before the accident, his lawyers say.

“Harmful and noxious gases emitted from the upholstery can infiltrate the driver’s compartment and potentially alter the driver,” the investigator wrote.
