What's the best rock band?
#21

i didn't count any soloists. the thread said "band". if we want to count soloists, shouldn't we also want to count producers?

My personal favourite is a Canadian band of icon proportions that are finally inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame. Rush. No one can deny the longevity of the band, the talent of each musician and the complexity of their music. I've been fortunate to see them live twice in the last several years and admire the fact that they still enjoy what they do. It's said that the highest form of flattery is being copied and there are certainly many bands that try to emulate the band Rush. Anyone agree?

Perhaps lets define what Rock is and what era it relates to. It would seem that the thread is using the original definition of what "Rock" was, rather than a more modern definition of what "Rock" is now classified as. Partridge family as Rock - now that gets me.

How about AC/DC? You need something that you can really stomp your foot to or bash your head to - think Bill and Ted's excellent adventure!

Most of what was originally classed as "Rock" is now classified as "Easy Listening" - so is this a generational gap or am I missing something?

Don't get me wrong, I like the Who (they are Rock), Pink Floyd (Alternative), Genisis, etc - even Cat Stephens and Neil Diamond (my dad listened to these) - but what is Rock?

Craig, this wasn't a cerebral question. There certainly are groups and performers who I wouldn't consider rock groups while others might. We always allow others to have opinions that are wrong!! Lol Just put your two cents in, that's all that is required!

Rap,

It is not a matter of what is right or wrong, just as to what is the context of the question. If we are talking the original definition of Rock (Elvis, Buddy Holly, etc) versus later segmentation of music into more definitions, it gives us a different answer. I am not a music boffin, but the definition of music has changed dramatically since "Rock" was created. Having a somewhat eclectic listening spectrum (my brother is a muso and I grew up listening to a lot of different music), the choices are pretty broad. The Clash - as the first real Punk band, the Police as a modern rock band, Talking Heads, Rolling Stones, AC/DC, U2, the Who, potentially even the Beach Boys/Chicago, etc.

I love Pink Floyd - have every album they made. Lucky enough to have a massive digital album listing that covers about everything, so very hard to define over something like 60 years. Still listen to them and they transport me back in time to wherever I was when the album came out - so in that respect - to me they are great. Still one of the bands that I would travel anywhere to see live.

I think you have hit the nail on the head however, I think too much. Perhaps Monty Python would be more appropriate - what is the average flight speed of a swallow?

Once we get into defining things here, this intellectual group will go off track and focus more on the definition and their opinion of it and not just the answering of a simple fun question! What's a Boffin? My comment on wrong was merely my ongoing tongue in cheek. Pink Floyd wouldn't come to mind if I was answering this question because I think of them as sort of one of those groups that expanded musical boundaries at the time. That said, I think they would certainly fall within the overall rock category. Not just mine. But that's the point, it is a matter of opinion and likes and dislikes. The Rolling Stones were somewhat eviscerated by Flash based upon his experience, professional background and opinion. This doesn't make his opinion right or wrong. It is merely his opinion. I like Lou Reed but after a certain point most of what he put out is not anything I would listen too. I buy it like a fool hoping for something good but. The Velvets early might be characterized as punk but also rock. That's why defining rock is difficult and why my question was so general.

The last few posts highlight why it is so difficult to pick a single best rock band. Maybe a list of peoples' top 5-10 favorites would be more in order (sorry, Rap, for commandeering your thread!). My top few would be:

The Beatles

The Who

Pearl Jam

The Foo FIghters

The Red Hot Chili Peppers

Pink Floyd

Green Day

The Moody Blues (haven't listened to them in years, though)

As far as promising newcomers, I've liked what I've heard from Florence and the Machine, Of Monsters and Men, and The Silversun Pickups.

Understand that I'm the farthest thing from a music connoisseur - haven't bought a CD in ages, don't own an iPod or smart phone, so I've never downloaded a song - I'm going strictly by what I hear on the radio. I know, I'm a dinosaur.

not that records sales ( or sales records ) is a measure for "best" , but I looked at this listing just out of curiosity -

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_bes...ic_artists ( odd that no one here posted Led Zeppelin.. , given their spot in history ..)

I have about 1,200 songs on my iPod and like all of them almost equally, so I feel pretty much the same as far as rock bands are concerned..can't say I like one as absolutely the best

that's funny - 4 out of 5 of the ones pictured were on my list of top 5 most influential people/bands. the 5th is a producer, and a toss up between george martin and phil spector.

I'm a big music fan, but not of just one genre. I have over 30K songs stored in FLAC (around 350GB of music), all accessible around the house via Squeezebox music players (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squeezebox_..._player%29).

I also log all my plays (and my wife's plays) using Last.fm.

http://www.last.fm/user/mbardeen

So to provide a definitive answer, according to my music plays as to my favorite Rock bands:

1. Bruce Springsteen

2. The Beatles

3. R.E.M. (kinda stretching the rock thing)

4. Pink Floyd

5. Grateful Dead

Agreed. Hands down.

I can't stand The Beatles -- screeching little weasels. I only liked George Harrison. The others sucks.

The Who. Townsend wrote two rock operas that were made into movies, which told stories. Did the Beatles write the music and the movies? I'm asking. After the 80's their music flattened out. Perhaps death or burnout. Watching the Sandy concert the crowd was clearly more engaged and singing along. Still a lot of good music to then and just not churning out album s for $. Just my opinion. Funk Bros were new to me also. Brian good obscurity!!! Lol

[/quote]

Townsend it fine, but Roger Daltry is right up there with Tom Jones. Ever notice how you never see them together? I think they're the same person.
