how are you measuring "best"

my money's on the Funk Brothers...more number-one hits than The Beatles, Elvis, Stones, and Beach Boys combined

but do they qualify as rock

Only answers wanted here my friend. Don't delve into measurements! Subjectivity rules. Lol

I was wondering if and when somebody would start a thread on this. Wow, that's a tough one, and SO subjective. It may sound trite, but realistically, how could it be anybody but the Beatles? Their level of innovation, the fact that their music changed and grew deeper and more complex (they didn't keep turning out the same stuff based on past success, in other words) with each succeeding album, the fact that each album contained scores of great songs (not just a hit or two), and that they had the good sense to quit while they were on top, sets them apart in my mind.

Had to Google the Funk Bros. as they are so famous I had never heard of them <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.png" class="smilie" alt="" /> Guess my white roots are showing. Saying they (studio musicians) were more famous than Jesus, paraphrasing John Lennon, is like saying Merriam and Webster were the best writers of all time, eh? <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.png" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/laugh.png" class="smilie" alt="" />

Talking Heads...

The Who. Townsend wrote two rock operas that were made into movies, which told stories. Did the Beatles write the music and the movies? I'm asking. After the 80's their music flattened out. Perhaps death or burnout. Watching the Sandy concert the crowd was clearly more engaged and singing along. Still a lot of good music to then and just not churning out album s for $. Just my opinion. Funk Bros were new to me also. Brian good obscurity!!! Lol

Rolling Stones

What show?

What's the best rock band? - flash - 12-14-2012

it's at NAMM. industry thing. second largest music convention in the world (frankfurt is the biggest). it's been a thing since 1901. about 100,000 people every year. i produce the biggest concert at this one. SRO every year.

Any music available from it without running afoul of any cracky laws?

What's the best rock band? - flash - 12-14-2012

hmmm - not sure. there is usually something floating around. we did do a couple of multi-cam shoots over the years. i might have audio from that. i'll see what i can find.

back on topic now.

i would have to go with the beatles for sure. i can't think of a band that was more influential on society, or had a greater impact on how songs were written from that point forward. you can hear the influence of the beatles in almost all music today.

perhaps it was largely timing. maybe it was just the hair. at any rate, it was certainly pivotal. they are the benchmark. anybody else really just pales by comparison. a good indicator of that is that everybody else is always compared to them. there are a few that were also very influential, revolutionary, and certainly of note, but just not to the level that they were.

OMG, I agree with Flash <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/laugh.png" class="smilie" alt="" /> .

The Beatles have to be #1 in my book. I'm dating myself, but to this day I remember the first time I heard the Beatles. On an AM radio and the song was "I Want to Hold Your Hand." I was riveted, had never heard anything like it and immediately wanted to hear more. "Rubber Soul", the "White Album" (which I bought the morning it was released) kind of defined things for me at the time. I saw Paul McCartney live a couple of summers ago, and he was still magnificent. (And at the Sandy concert Weds, Mick Jagger just looked OLD.)

lol - it was bound to happen sooner or later. after all, we do own the same car.

What's the best rock band? - Cloud9...68 - 12-14-2012

Yeah, seriously, this poll should be renamed, "What's the second best rock band?"

What's the best rock band? - Rap - 12-14-2012

Buddy Holly could arguably be the greater influence. Think about all the different types of music and editing and overlays he did that were groundbreaking. I'm also out of my league here with you Bob, but anyway!

Start your own thread dude!!!! Lol will you end it at 2nd or will this quickly spiral out of control? Lol. If bva gets involved no one will recognize the bands! Least not a guy that lives on a dirt road in the woods!
