what Porsche is that ?!
#1

Last week I faced another, " Wow, what kinda' Porsh is this ? " question , followed by " it's a V8, right ? " And in typical fashion, I answered : " actually no, it's a small block V10, twin turbo " , but then within moments as they're still wide eyed I always confess that it's just a big-ass 4 banger... which perhaps amazes them even more so, but you know, to this day I wish this car did have a small block V8 . No, not a Chevy V8, a PORSCHE V8 ! I'd honestly be happy with just the 240 hp it has now, but if it was coming out of 8 cylinders as opposed to our 4 ; I realize it's only a mindset but I have a hard time getting past the stigma of driving a 4 banger, no matter how powerful. And I hate pretty much all six cylinders engines, don't like the way they revv, the way the sound, anything about them for that matter.. so a 968 with a V8 would have been THE dream car for me.

I"m afraid that a V8 would have put a 968 out of reach for most buyers even more than it already was when compared to the Japanese products of the same era.

But it would have been a killer car for sure.

Surprisingly 928s don't sound all that great. I'm no mustang fan but the sound coming from that is awesome.

a 302 with a borla exhaust has got to be one of the sexiest sounding engines ever

To this day I can tell the sound of a Ford 302 coming down a street well before I see it. I've also learned to tell the sound of the Porsche 3.6 and 3.8. When I do hear one or the other, I'll call the car out loud and my friends will look with me to see if I'm right, and I've yet to be wrong. Music to my ears. Best sound I've ever heard? 1970 Boss 302. I will own one soon. They've dropped to abut 70-80k for a pristine example. Grabber blue with the black interior!

I had one similar experience. After I owned the car for a few months, I was at a gathering of friends. One of them swore that my 8 cylinder engine was missing, and that is sounded like all the cylinders were not firing. I told him it was a 4 cylinder, and he couldn't believe it, and told me I better double check that it is only a 4-cyl engine.

it's amazing how many of us think the 302 exhaust tune is pure symphony ! same with me, just love that note.

interestingly though, at one end of the spectrum ( high pitch screaming ) I dislike the Carrera GT, at at the other end ( overly loud gurgling ) I dislike the 427 Cobra .. the DB9 at WOT is my all time favorite sound, which simply coincides with the fact that it's also my all time favorite design.

having said that, I'd still take my BB ( no resonator ) catback on the 968 over just about anything else I've heard, except for the 302, the DB9, and the Ferrari 355

I agree with MOST of what you guys have stated above. I, however, rather like the sound of an idling 427 Cobra. And yes, the GT can begins to sound a bit tinny way up high in the rpm's.

I truly like the sound of a small block Ford with headers and turbo-style mufflers. But I also love the sound of the Porsche Cayenne turbo or S taking off from a standing start with the throttle buried. Sweet sound indeed as it pops thru the gears!!!

Just my $0.02

I've never heard a 968 with a BB or RSB exhaust so I have nothing to go by there. I need to upgrade mine though so any available sound bytes would be awesome. I know it's very difficult to record the true sound on You Tube or whatever but I need to hear it to believe it. You know what I mean?!

just my 20 cents worth - but you can fit a Chev LS3 V8 into a Porsche 944. A friend of mine is doing it right now over here. hopefully this will be finished by mid-year. You only have to replace the front cross member and it goes straight in.

Given the weight of a LS3 - it retains the same overall weight and balance of a stock 944. So if it fits in a 944 - it should also fit in a 968. So how does 317kW (roughly 400hp) sound. By the way - you can buy superchargers over here in Australia that fit in the valley of the V in the engine and can get over 600hp.

Worth thinking about.

Once the 944 is built and I hopefully get a drive - I will post what it is like.

Food for thought.

Somehow listening to car sounds from a computer just doesn't get the job done. Needs to be played through the home theater with some subs to get the idea I think.

craig - just a note - the crate LS3 is 415lbs, vs the 968 engine of 372lbs (the 944 engine is even lighter) - also, the crate LS3 does not come with the manifolds or accessories, and the 372 of the 968 engine is complete but dry, so there is about 100lbs added with the LS3 when you are done - not the end of the world, but definitely more weight

ryan - agreed - i have a sub on my computer speakers, but it still isn't quite right - i have to fire up the studio monitors to hear what things really sound like, and far too often the recording is done with the cheesy mic of a video camera, which completely lacks the low frequency response, and that is where the grunt is in an exhaust tone

Flash,

Another 160hp and bags of torque would make for an interesting debate on engine weights (an additional 20kg or so. . . . .). It would be madness to then try a supercharged version with something like 600hp and monster torque. It would be like a Jeremy Clarkson road test every day.

It would almost be tempting to have an automatic. This engine in a 1,800kg car is good for very low 5 seconds 0-100km/h. In a car weighing 1,400kg - have to be around 4 seconds if you could get grip. So many options and only one car to play with - if only I was Jay Leno.
