What is wrong with the search function?
#1

Hmmm....when I can't come up with anything under the terms "coupe engine" or "cabriolet storage", something is definitely amiss. Thoughts?

I did a search for "cab storage" and got a few hits (2 <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/blink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> ), "coupe + engine" search came up with nothing, but thats because they are all pedal power <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/laugh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

that is exactly why i sorted out the threads and created the new categories - the search engine requires specific words, and there was no real way to get a good search

as for "coupe engine" i can't imagine anybody ever used that phrase, so it would not show anything - "coupe" or "engine" would each turn up a lot, but together, they won't

Hey Flash...When can we expect the Gallery tab to function...really would like to see our members cars...is it something that needs to be addressed as in having everyone up load a picture?

just been trying to find the time to resize all the pics - when it got set up at the beginning, people were allowed to upload full res pics (many were 2mb) - we can't do that - takes up WAY too much space - it was causing the site to crash

i'll be working on this over the next week or so, including the software upgrade, and should have it back up at that time

Here's an example. This thread exists:

http://www.968forums.com/index.php?showtopic=4325

I can get there searching by the full title:

"Convertible Storage Bins & Brace"

or

"Convertible Storage Bins"

But when I try searching All forums for "Convertible Bins" or Convertible Brace", I get no matches. Somethin' ain't right if you need to put in an exact string to get a match.

Are the search function settings on the server set to require exact strings? An inquiry with very general terms like "coupe engine" should come up with a bunch of entries, which is why I used it as a control.

Cheers,

-Mirror

i think the problem is that you expect it to grab things that have one or the other word, and not just things that have both - i would hate that - drives me nuts on google - i type in something with more than one word, and i get links to one word or the other, but not limited to things with all of them - i only want things with all of the words i choose

coupe engine would not be a "general" term in my mind - since there is no difference between the coupe and cab engine, why would that term ever pop up? i've never heard of it in reference to a 968, so i can't imagine the search engine had either

like i said, if you used a general term like "engine" or "coupe", it should return a lot of results - but both together would only return things with both words - try it now, and you will see all of the times we have used "coupe engine" today

so, i think it is working perfectly - maybe i am missing something?

by the way if you type in "convertible bins" and search all forums, and set results as posts, it pops up fine

That is 1 reason I dislike when people say "use the search".

If someone is new to the internet or a forum of if you do not type the right thing, you either come up short or have to read a gazzilon post to find what you want read.

It would help newbies only if they read it. But would always help.

For one of the websites I admin ( http://txtwriter.com ) we are using the Google Adsense search tool on each page and it works really well for searching within the site or abroad, and generates pretty good revenue.

Just a thought since it appears 968forums is already using Adsense.
