WEIGHT SAVINGS
#1

a few times now, the subject of weight savings has come up, and people have asked what i have done - i thought i would post a list of the things i have yanked out so far, and how that relates to performance

BALLAST WEIGHT was41 now0

EXHAUST was51 now20.5

FLYWHEEL was38 now12

REAR BUMPER was20 now11

FRONT BUMPER was16 now0

TORSION BARS was10 now0

COIL SPRINGS was0 now5

SHOCKS was7 now5

SPARE, JACK, COMP, TOOLS was43 now0

SEATS was105 now62

LUGGAGE BAR was3 now0

930 S STEERING WHEEL was12 now4

STORAGE BOXES was 20 now0

SAVINGS 241.5

the HRE 547 wheels remove another 7 lbs or real weight, after adding back in the increased tire weight, but 28lbs of effective weight - that makes a total of 261lbs of effective weight, (8.05% of the total weight) or an effective 19.3hp!

that is without calculating in the effective horsepower increases of the flywheel itself

next up are lighter rotors, passenger airbag, and some of the insulation and glue

i'll have to go back and find the weight savings info on the power pulleys - it escapes me right now

i should be able to get down to about 2950 before i have to start messing with body panels

Good job Flash! Which lighter weight rotors are you thinking of? Brembo has some called GTP, how much will they save? thanks, Bob Blackwell.

What have you done to the front and rear bumpers?

thanks - it's really like free power - getting much closer to that magic 10 to 1 number

believe it or not, apparantly there are a few out there to choose from - i'm going to be doing the homework on that one this coming week

initial losses look to be in he neighborhood of 4-6lbs per corner of unsprung weight, which also acts as wheel weight in as much as the effective ratio - that would be like yanking another 100lbs when it comes to acceleration and braking

woohoo!!!

I've been doing the same thing to my 944/968 hybrid:

deleted A/C

deleted rear seats and replaced with a homemade CS-type cover

Sparco Evo seats in pace of leather armchairs

Lexan hatch and quarter windows

fiberglass sunroof panel

carbon fiber hood

It's a an 80% track car, though still street legal, and with a full interior. I haven't weighed it lately, but expect it to be around 2600 lbs.

dave - yeah - getting down there - and since most of the weight has been from the rear, i am also headed toward that ugly state of front weight imbalance the tiger had - trying to come up with ideas to handle that - sure wish we had an OEM fitting real carbon fiber hood available

terry - depending on which year, you could be as high as about 2800 or so, or as low as 2600, but you're off to a good start nonetheless - get her weighed and corner balanced - it's a real motivator

this is fun stuff for sure - it's like christmas

All this juicy weight-saving makes me jealous...

Running a 968 in PCA F-stock, guess what?

You usually have to ADD weight in the form of ballast to make weight!

That's WITH a full cage installed.

Kinda sad. Just means the street cars will always out-drag me in a straight line

I used a set that I purchased from one of the on-line hot rod shops (about $125 as I recall) and used them with a 3.5 liter V8 installed in a 914. Very light and very efficient. I've held both the 968 and these fans and the difference was remarkable. The fans sucked the air from the front and down under the car. Look closely at the front end. The car sucked air from between the bumper and valance and from the fog light grills, about 215 sq. inches.[/right]

Nah, I can picture Flash scrounging though wrecking yards, looking for the first wrecked Cayman to yank off its ceramic rotors

Flash,

Sounds like you're getting close to maxxing out on your weight reduction project..seeing as you have a cab and all.

I've got my coupe down to 2,640 and we're doing the Lexan rear hatch project over the next few months. I hope I can break the 2,600 lbs barrier!

Not too bad considering we have a full cage inside, too!
