Weight of stock tires
#1

I decided last nite to drive the white car today because it is supposed to be a nice day. Last Friday I picked it up at Provost and drove it home and parked it. The week before I picked up the red 968 from Provost after having some work done which included having new rims and tires installed. Yes I know, two cars two successive weeks in a row with a two hour one way drive time, what are you nuts? So the next person that bitches or whines about how much these cars can cost you, please just be quiet! Only two of the four stock tires went into the red 968. Two went into the white 968. So last week when I parked the car I forgot I was still carrying two stock tires in the white 968. This morning sipping coffee I had the ow s--t thought and remembered the tires. So I go over to the garage to remove the tires and holy crap these are heavy. I suspect I probably restressed( my word) my shoulder putting them up into the tire rack.

So how much do these things weigh? They have Yoko advans on. Inquiring minds and aching shoulders would like to know!

about 25-26 lbs, depending on whether they are fronts or rears, and what brand and season tire, etc

18s will weigh a couple of pounds more.

you can see tire weights on the tire rack site.

My mistake. The correct question should have been what do stock rims and tires weigh? AJG, for a guy that wears a bra you want me to man up? I wrenched my shoulder doing it. Perhaps the racks are too high! Perhaps I'm a weakling. I don't have a wife!

16s are about 45-46lbs total each. 17s are about 48-49 lbs each (replicas weigh more). again, fronts are obviously a bit lighter than rears.

yup - really light ones are about 50. as an example, my 9" wide rims with a 255-35 on it is 50.5lbs. my 10" with a 285-30 is 52.

that's why it's better to go with a smaller diameter for a track car. run a lower profile tire on a 17, and you can save about 4 lbs each, drop your final gear ratio down a bit, and really have more punch out of the turns, make your suspension quicker to respond and more nimble, improve your braking, and all without giving up anything in traction. the guys out there running 18s haven't done the math.

it's only because i wanted to maintain the gear ratio and speedometer calibration that i went to 18s, but then my car is a street car and not a track car, so the issues are not the same.

if i were to set up a track car, i would run a 17x9 all around, and put a 245-35 on it.

I'm really sorry about your shoulder, strain injuries are the pits. You really don't get the bra joke do you?
