WA State 968
#1

Hello. I was a member some time ago. I am coming back, now retired. My wife has a 1994 968 Cabrio. I have a 67 XKE and a 2019 Beck Spyder that I got as a retirement present to myself. Looking forward to rejoining the club and forums. Judd Marten, Winthrop WA

Welcome Judd. I, too own a 968 and a Spyder. Missing the Jag, though.

VW-powered or Subie?

Mine is #201, home-built back in the 90s, with a recent repaint and interior and the original 1600 replaced by a CB Performance 2.0L.

My Spyder is VW, CB performance 2 liter, 140 hp.

After a year of pandemic and most of the summer lost due to wildfires, I am just now packing some miles on the Spyder, about 1700 so far. Getting a feel for this beast. When my wife and I take out both cars, our 2 person car club, nobody knows anything about either car, love it.

Sadly, mine has been neglected all summer waiting on me to redo the brakes and install a new oil pump/filter.

I ignored the 968 last summer, so its his turn.

Hoping to at least get the oil pump done so I can take it up to C&C on the first weekend of September.

I know the problem. It's hard to prioritize between these 2 cars because they are both so much fun to drive. After having many front engine performance cars I think the key is balance. Either front engine, rear trans, or mid-engine--totally different driving experience. Have fun.

Welcome back Judd. Gotta love those mid-engine cars, more better place than in the rear for sure...

I think so.

But front engine rear transaxle is very stable also, like our 968s and the previous edition Corvettes.

The weight is over the wheels, front and back, where you need the traction.

I guess that is what I am coming to in my old age--I like either mid engine, or split front to back.

And if I were choosing between front engine and trans, and rear engine and trans, I would select rear, like so many great 911 Porsches out there.

I mean as a total gearhead with way too many cars, my most recent daily driver is a 2016 Mustang GT convertible, with a Vortech supercharger,12 lbs boost, 635 rwhp on the dyno.

If I floor that thing it might drop the auto trans one gear too low, and I am headed for the ditch in a heartbeat.
