Voltage Gauge
#21

I think my confusion comes from finding the model # online (at rockauto.com) it said "internal regulator". But based on the picture I found there I think I see what you mean...

New Question: I have't personally replaced an alternator in years (back in my trusty Fiat days ).

Chris' stupid question of the day: Current alternator is two weeks old - do they come with regulator?

GOOD NEWS!

(At least if you are the sort that finds the silver lining in things).

I was going to run over to my PM today to have them take another quick look at the voltage output after I cleaned the grounds (at least the 6 I could find) over the weekend.

And remember how she would die going from reverse into drive - it happened again! Normally bad news, but the good news is that it happened when they were pulling her into the shop!

AH HA! NOW they got to see it in action and since they did the last alternator they know it's not that. Still just seems to be working, and then suddenly the electrical goes completely "off line" as it were.

So I am hoping my next post on this will be my last as we'll finally have figured it out - then I can focus on making her run better (rather than just making her run).

I am thinking that Flash's line of thinking on my alternator post here is in the end going to be pretty close - but we shall see.....

We might have it licked (cross your fingers).

This time they got the fault "Open circuit / ground short not present" on the tiptronic.

Problem is that nothing was found to cause such a thing. All the wiring and grounds still check out.

So in the end we put in a second ground wire from the torque tube to the body, thereby hopefully circumventing the gremlin, wherever he may be.

Now my dash voltage is pretty consistently between 12 and 12.5 (I am 1 low on the dash).

No problems with the tiptronic, and overall power fluctuations seem to be a lot less (would drop .5 before when stepping on the brakes).

She has been running so good in fact, I decided to correct my stereo weirdness by getting a new deck today.

Thanks to everyone to replied to my previous posts on my electrical issues - I really hope I NEVER bring them up again!

I'm bumping this thread because I am about to tackle the removal of my instrument cluster to: a)fix the volt meter which now pegs at 16V and change the bulbs so things are readable at night.

The problem is that the key pictures in post #11 from 2006 are not there (at least on my browser). Is there any way to resurrect these pictures?????

Clark's garage has a writeup.. http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/elect-07.htm

Nice pictures there, but I'm not sure if they're an exact replacement. I'm about to tackle this particular job myself (CS steering wheel, new LED bulbs, maybe attempt to fix temp gauge), so any additional feedback/sources of pictures are welcome.
