VIR vs Watkins Glen
#21
Jim, what are representative lap times for a 968 at VIR? I checked some online race qualifying times but they seem too slow. I have the airbox mod and a chip, and turn 2:25s on a good day in a street car with mild suspension mods and race tires.
Anything in the 2:17 - 2:14 range would be a competitive time for an F class 968. Since you're not prepared to the limit of the F class rules, you shouldn't expect to go that fast. You could probably get your car down to the 2:21 range if you wanted to really push it in the fast corners.

As I think this thread shows, I never got to VIR in the fall. Today, though, I'm off to Watkins Glen for another two-day DE. This time, I'm being accompanied by my son and his Maserati Spyder. Hopefully, we'll both have a fine time and the weather will allow some top-down laps. For the first time, I'll be trying to shoot some video. Among other things, that'll be a way for me to get an idea of lap times - I don't time myself, even crudely, and I'm not seeking that kind of pressure. But, the information should be interesting.

So - the two-day DE of last week is now history. The goals were accomplished - fun was had, the cars looked the same at the end as they did at the beginning (normal wear and tear excepted), and the second day was a top-down day. I managed to shoot some video - but, because I don't yet have a harness bar, I had to invert the camera mount on the roll bar, so the video is upside-down. (This is manageable on a laptop, but still bothersome. Anyone have any idea how I can fix that? It's coming up on my computer as a QuickTime file, but that's probably because that's the only video software I have.)

Lap times are embarrassing - and the fact that I hadn't been on the track for about 18 months showed. But, what the heck - best lap on the video was 2:38.

My son also had a great time, and we're now looking for a two-car trailer that we can borrow or rent (not ready to buy one!) so that we can do a VIR outing together.
