Maybe every law student who attended school before 1969 when that decision was overturned and narrowed to where it's only illegal to say something that incites violence or imminent bodily harm, it's not enough to simply cause a potentially dangerous situation by your speech. Along the same lines , slander or libel parameters or "offensive" speech is continuously being challenged and those parameters are always shifting with courts decisions all over the place and each case decided on it's own merit, and often head-scratching outcomes from judges who overlook many legal principles and render verdicts based on their communities' standards or simply their own sentiments on any given subject.

lol - you have to stop getting your legal education from wikipedia. they still teach the case in law school, and with good reason. they taught it to ayn.



the point is that the law still stands with regards to it basic intention. if you have a bumper sticker that says something obvious, which could enflame someone, you can be held liable for the consequences. this is completely appropriate. we should not be allowed to say "whatever we want". there are some "safe grounds", such as politics and religion, but there are things that just should not be said publicly, and profanity is one of them.



the slippery slope is determining what is appropriate and what is not. we all know what it is, but we cannot seem to define it. pornography is the same. we all know what it is, but cannot define it. so, how do you determine how to proceed?



a current measuring stick is whether or not your 6 year old should be subjected to it.

Nothing to do with wikipedia, in my profession I'm exposed to more legal cases annually, and in most diverse arenas of the law , than many attorneys are.. You ( and Ayn ) probably see far more commercial related cases where these arguments are much more prevalent because the plaintiff can assert economic damages, whereas personal filings for emotional distress or whatnot as a result of being " offended " by anything you see or hear, typically have a snowball's chance in hell of prevailing.. I'm not saying that we have absolute freedom of speech, far from it as a matter of fact , as there are countless consequences to making any statements that touch any given group or any given person's sensibilities, but previuosly citable case law on what may have been deemed unacceptable is hardly considered anymore.. ther are overt racist and highly inflammatory statements cases under curtemt review by appellate courts, cases brought by the ACLU against tne state authorities and similar governmental agencies using the first amendment as a basis for the lawsuits..

If your a liberal you can not only say anything your heart or current obsession desires but the liberal pysdodemocratic media will broadcast your statement and back it. as for the media, the conservative media has always filtered the truth out, and left only what the advertisers want. that's why we need to lobby to ban commercials from the news. the fcc gave license to the networks in exchange for 1 hour a night of news. this was always supposed to be free of any corruption and interference by motivation of profit. that has become a thing of the past, as has any unbiased print news. it's not hard to see where stories come from.

So my tags are blasé ? <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/blink.png" class="smilie" alt="" /> Hmmm. I really don't like to advertise too much about myself, so I would never put names on my tags...for the same reason I post very little on my facebook page.

Actually I thought my plates were pretty cool, they are in my opinion witty and say something about the two rare cars I own.

In addition, I spent 2 hours on the DMV website checking tags that were available and all the ones I really thought I wanted were taken.

I am happy with what I have, so I am sticking with them. I hate the ones that are so obtuse that you can't figure them out.

Don't worry flash, I was not offended by your comment.

Here's my previous blasé plates. The top one was on my '89 944 Turbo(S )which I raced in E Stock in PCA Club Racing. The bottom one was on my current car when I lived in SC. I have to admit that my GA tag is whatever the DMV gave me. Now that's blasé.



EDIT. Now this is interesting. The site is not letting me post a picture in the normal way. So I tried pasting it, which I guess isn't allowed either. What good is this topic if we can't post pictures in it?



BTW. The top plate is my Illinois tag RENN 951. The bottom one is my South Carolina tag 968M030.

to me, putting the model or color of the car on your plate is just unimaginative, and a missed opportunity. it's obvious what the car is. why restate it? how is that different than another one just like it? there are almost no unique 968s. saying anything 968 is just silly and boring. unless you're like me, and have removed the emblems, it's already back there.



they are "vanity" plates after all. it's a time to be vain. it's a time for you to be different than anybody else.



i agree that too obtuse is annoying, but then i chalk most of that up to me just not being bright enough to figure it out.



this is why i have not yet done one on the denali though. i just haven't figured out what i want to do there. but you can bet that it won't be anything about the car that is emblazoned elsewhere or obvious. that's just a waste of money. i am almost there on the bike though. i have a couple i need to fiddle with and see if are available.



as for not being able to post pics here, this entire area is closed to new threads and pics. i just haven't moved every thread around to where it belongs yet (there are still about 1500 to go). i haven't closed those threads though. once each thread is moved to where it belongs, it becomes able to have pics posted, if that area allows pics.

i'm fine with whatever makes somebody happy. i just don't get restating the obvious. i don't need somebody to tell me the sky is blue. i can see that for myself. i can similarly read the insignia on the car to know what it is. i don't need a license plate to tell me twice. now if you said "944S3" that would be something clever
