I just got my car back from getting it it's 60k mile tune up (car has just over 38K miles). I will make another couple posts about this later when I have more time but for now I have one quick question. I sent the car in with a filthly oil-covered tray under the engine and got back a completely clean tray that almost looks brand new. However, the tray the car was returned with is plastic/fiberglass and I seem to remember the old tray being sheetmetal. Am I just remembering wrong and this is the factory piece or did they make a switch? There is nothing on my invoice about this.

Ya I am talking about the one that is on the belly of the car under the engine. You have to remove it to change the oil. I believe Flash was saying its there to reduce drag under the car.

What year model is your 968? And if it is a 94 is it early or late?



Early 968s had the under bumper tray and a tray under the engine made out of plastic as well as a metal tray further back that has to be removed to change the oil. Newer 968s did not come with the metal tray .

Its officially a '94 but has the 718 option code so I guess for these purposes its a '93? The tray I'm wondering about is the one directly below the engine that they would have removed to change the oil and work on the engine for the 60k tune up.



So the next big question is if they did swap a dirty sheetmetal tray for a clean fiberglass/plastic tray should I say something? My gut feeling is that they did a nice job on my car but I would rather have the dirty sheetmetal tray.

My 92 has both the plastic front tray and the short metal one that goes around the sump.

My 94 has a plastic undertray that ends at the crossmember. Never knew there was a second part for rear of the crossmember until recently, I guess it was discontinued at some point?



BTW, with a Caton Racing oil filter no more spilled oil from the filter. I'd like to someday put my undertray all back in place and never take it off again!

Questions for those of you who are intimately familiar with the trays:



My '92 came to me without the big plastic under-nose piece, but with the plastic undertray and the metal tray behind that. I just bought and installed the under-nose piece and was surprised at the fastening locations it used, and those it didn't use.



Just under the radiator there's a metal lip with some holes, and two speednuts (looks like there should be three and one was missing). But the under-nose tray covered this area completely and didn't attach there. What are the speednuts for?



My plastic undertray had two bolts and nuts assembled to it, about 8" back from the front, that I had always assumed were for the under-nose piece, but it doesn't extend that far back. And there are three sets of two square holes with round holes in between, which don't seem to be used for anything either. PET doesn't show anything mounting there, either for the 968 or 944S2 or Turbo, which use the same plastic part.



I got everything reinstalled OK; it just didn't connect where I'd expected it to. And I was surprised that it looks like the under-nose piece, with its 16 screws, has to come off to get the middle plastic tray off, to get the metal tray off, to change the oil. Gotta be a better way.

you may be missing the 2 plastic side pieces that are at the front where the front lower pan meets the middle pan - that might explain some of the hardware and mounting hole confusion - i'll try to see if i have a pic of that for you



i agree though that there is an awful lot of hardware here, and they could have done a better job working this out - when i finally get the undercarraige aerodynamic work, i plan to clean up that hardware nightmare by using some captive fasteners in a few places, and standardizing the hardware across the entire assembly

Nope, I don't have those (P/Ns 944 504 385 01 & 944 504 386 01). Presumably they're to further control the airflow over the lower part of the engine.

i'll try to get under there in the next day or so and take some pics of the screw holes and such to try to illustrate how it attaches and maybe why things look so odd to you



they do a pretty fair job of keeping crap from going up there too
