Dash removal issue
#1

Folks,

I am using the Clarks garage Dash removal/install directions to take out my dash. I believe I have everything done, but while the front of the dash seems loose, it seems solidly attached near the windshield/firewall. Is there something different on the 968s than the 944s that I am missing, or is the dash just being stubborn? I am asking becuase there are lots of differences in the bolts that hold the dash in compared to the directions for the 944 (2 side bolts per side vs 1 cited in the directions, 4 on the console to torque tube vs 2 cited, etc.).

I also noticed a nut at almost the center of the dash back by the firewall, but I am assuming this is for the condensor box vs the dash. Please let me know if this is the culprit.

One other comment - while unhooked, I have not removed the passenger side airbag as access is difficult due to the dash ductwork. Just wanted to make sure i give full disclosure....

Thanks in advance!!

i am told there are a couple of tabs back there, similar to the ones on the door panels, so you probably have to lift

i know somebody else taking theirs out in the next day or so. i'll verify that

Got the dash out last night - part of it was just that is is a tight fit, but the main problem was a bracket for the airbag bolted to the firewall. Once that was out the dash pulled pretty easily.

Thanks!

A few pictures to help anyone who ventures into this mess. The designers were sadists and/or idiots.

From under dash with glove box removed. Temperature sensor tube.

The other end is attached to the temp sensor - high up on the firewall about straight back from the dash outlet.

The plastic tabs on each end of the climate control unit - what a joke. These things are used to hold the flimsy black plastic trim piece that sits on top.

Said flimsy piece. The cutout for the tab is highlighted. This is like stretching a rubber band across a set of teeth braces - except that this is not rubber its poly whatever and does not stretch. It was almost impossible to get this to fit so I very gently heated the black trim piece up a bit with a heat gun, stretched it over the ears on the clear piece, then held it for a minute to allow it to shrink back. Worked OK but what a stupid design. I guess Porsche had all the smart guys working under the hood.

rxter,

Thanks, this is very helpful. That black rubber tube which you guys have identified as the temperature sensor tube just fell out from my car a couple of years ago when I was preparing to pull the engine. I had no idea what it was, but it's so nondescript and flat-out unimportant looking that I hope I didn't throw it away. What exactly does it do? And what, if anything, is it supposed to be attached to at the bottom?

Also, did you remove your seat when you were doing your work? I've found that that helps tremendously for under-dash work.

The tube connects the temperature sensor near the firewall to the small round grated opening next to the cigarette lighter. Interior climate control feedback. I was 50/50 on putting it back in as I am pretty happy manually adjusting the hot/cold settings - if I'm cold I turn up the heat....

Did not remove the seat. I'm a small guy and can get pretty comfy with my feet up on the roll bar. But yes that would make life a lot easier under the dash.
