Help! Can't get trim piece off
#1

I am in the process of replacing the bulb of my temp sensor. However, I cannot get this trip piece out:

More specifically, I can't get the plug out that hides the screw(arrow). There is no way to get underneath it, and it is in there firmly. Has anybody struggled with this before (and succeed)? Is there a trick to make it easier?

It is so tight that I even think it may not be a plug to hide a screw, but a plug that holds the whole panel....

I hope one of you guys can help.

Just get something small and flat and gently pry it. Its not rubber but a thin plastic, you may damage it. But it will come out. Nothing else is holding it in unless a PO glued it....

yeah - it's very easy to remove. you just need the right tool. if you're having problems with that though, the rest of the dash is going to be an impossible challenge, as it has all sorts of little pieces that pop in like that, and hidden screws.

Success!

I got the thing off (with a small knife) and removed the rest of the trim pieces. I changed out the bulb and now the temp sensor has light again

While I was in there, I saw that the AC clear plate (part #4 in the diagram) was already cracked at all 4 screw holes (works fine still, though). I searched but it seems it is NLA. Anybody have one for sale by any chance? Could be my next project ...

The good news is that that is a 944 part as well and should be easily available on the used market.

Item No. 4 (P/N 944.653.912.00) is no longer available. A rebuilt unit is available (P/N 944.653.021.04.01C) but will not include item number 4 as well as a few other items. Very expensive for just needing plastic. I had given thought to attempting a fix with acetone and plastic shavings but not gotten around to it.
