ok, so we've all heard about:



weird drive noises

moaning and groaning

rattles in the top frame, usually at the header rail



here's the question though:



after setting the top in manual mode, has anybody noticed any new rattles in the fram itself, at the side of the car? i had ayn drive it (that was an adventure all by itself) while i listened - sure enough, the frame is rattling - if i grab it, it goes quiet - my theory is that the washer and bolt that are loosened to make it in manual mode are loose and rattling, or allowing free play in the mechanism



i am almost done with the in and out of stuff in the car, so i will go back to power mode soon, but i was just wondering if anybody else has noticed this particular phenomenon



it may just be my car, because everything is now so stiff, and i've gotten rid of most of the rubber suspension bushings, and this kind of thing is likely to happen



it's the only rattle i have though, and i am determined to get rid of it

I also have the same rattle on the passenger side where the top pivots. It is hard to pinpoint while driving and I have not asked someone to drive me around while I listen, GULP!



If I am going to stay manual, what can I do to tighten things up and still allow manual movement? What if I just remove the "manual" bolt to stop it from rattling? If I am going to stay manual I guess that I could also remove weight by pulling the motors and trans. cable assemblys, That stuff must weight 15#.

How can I eliminate looseness in the frame?

I will try and work on it this weekend and post what I find.

i am planning on taking a better look in there tomorrow, but since the manual says to loosen in up 3 turns, there isn't likely much that can be done - anything that would reduce the rattle will likely also add friction, and then BOINK



best of luck removing all the stuff - that is a very aggressive project - it's no fun getting to that stuff underneath the shelf

Boy, you are right!

You could take the top off of the car and try to get under the shelf to get out the motors, but it is a very big undertaking.

I am going to leave the motors etc. in the car.

When I go back to electric mode the rattles should go away.

pretty much my thought too



i found out how much fun it was to get to the motors when i had the cr shot - i had to nearly remove the top to avoid a masking line, and it revealed the top works



not planning on getting back in there any time soon if i can help it

I wonder if adding a couple nylon washers (double stacked on each side) in the mix would help reduce friction and allow them to be tightened down more but yet maintain manual mode.
