i just spoke to the upholsterer - the pattern is done and he is sewing up the first one now

testing to happen either this afternoon or tomorrow morning

i am just waiting to make sure there are no hiccups before publishing a price

production time is 3-4 days for first batch - he says he can do them next week - theoretically i can ship on 3/27

be ready

saw it - touched it - fondled it - almost done - looks GREAT!!! i'll post pics and numbers an hour after i drive it to make sure it works perfectly, and there were no curve balls - the front tabs worked phenomenally

the way this is going to shake down is that there will be multiple versions

the basic unit will fit stock seats, but no chassis brace - allows for factory windscreen - black or blue sonnenland (original robbins material)

on all units there will be no drilling or cutting of anything required - simple attachment at all points
marine grade black super sturdy zipper up the middle
complete with black vinyl storage bag

this will NOT work with the autopower roll bar or the x-brace for my chassis brace - you might need to adjust the seat position to fit within the headrest pocket - the alternative was a very large floppy and unattractive pocket

there will be an additional upcharge for:

--larger headrest pockets for aftermarket seats (like mine)

--cutouts for chassis brace (basically a notch to go around the bar)

--velcro cut-outs for harnesses (a velcro slit behind the headrests so the harnesses can slip in there when not in use)

--any color other than black or blue (as far as i know there were only magenta and grey, but anything that is available can be done)

so, you may need to think ahead on a few things - if you plan to get aftermarket seats, you'll need to plan for that - if you plan to upgrade to the chassis brace, you'll need to plan for that too

well, i got stuck today - ayn needed the M3, the white car is at the upholsterer, the blue car is awaiting the flywheel being balanced, and the denali has been at the dealership for driveline work for a week now - rebuilt the front diff twice, and now the transfer case - so, i'm stranded

taking advantage of the car time i did have this morning, i popped by the upholsterer on my way back from picking up parts for the shifter, en route back to give ayn the M3 - he was waiting on more fabric - we are adding a bit of length in the rear, just for good measure - will arrive about noon and then he can finish - it was off the car, so no photo op

bottom line, you're all going to have to wait until tomorrow to see the pics - sorry

arrrrgh!

the teasing continues - the extra fabric we had to order did not arrive yesterday - won't be there until after noon - no chance of getting it today - might be close enough to sneak a shot late this afternoon, but not likely

so, i'll probably have to sit here all weekend in anticipation wondering if it all worked out or not

OT a bit, but related to the ragtop: one of my business associates' brand new BMW 650i ragtop was slashed last week by some a**hole who only did that to take the $ 200 iPod my colleague had ( yes, unwittingly ..) left in the car.
Not sure why they did not simply break a window instead, but I suppose anyone who steals for a living is not all that considerate to evaluate what might be the be cheaper option to the car owner..
Cost to replace the rag : $ 7,500 ! Well, $ 1k out of pocket for the deductible, but anyway, the point is.. careful what you ( we all ) leave in the car -

that is why for the last 30 years i rarely lock the car, and NEVER leave anything in sight - a pen is all you need and you have access

in one of my MGBs i used to have a sign on the dash that said "Take what you want but please don't hurt the car"

Yep yep. I remove the head unit face plate, put loose stuff in the trunk and throw a towel over anything else. Unless I am parking in the sun for a while I'll just leave the top down and never lock the doors regardless. What's the point really - its just a thin piece of fabric.

maybe a whole new thread dedicated to this subject would make sense since I'm ( once again ) off topic, but even if you hide away the GPS, radar detector, iPod ( or stereo face plate ) etc.. but forget to wipe off the marks left by suction cups on your windshield, or leave the iPod cable connection in sight, or any of those little overlooked details, thieves know those items are likely in your glove box, trunk, etc.. and break in.
Leave a stack of Soldier of Fortune magazines on your front seat, maybe the would-be thieves think you and your 9mm might just show up while they're in the middle of ripping you off ..

when i spoke to him yesterday afternoon, he had everything he needed, was wrapping up a steering wheel on a show car that has been at the shop for a long time (huge project), then getting back to mine, and planned to be done before he left - i think it's done and i should get to see the result this morning

went by the upholsterer today - tonneau was on the car - we're making a couple of changes to the straps, and adding a couple of tabs - all happening tomorrow morning

the headrest pockets he made for my seats (much larger than standard, got lost in translation somehow - he'll be adjusting those tomorrow as well - against my better judgement i snapped a couple of shots, but the shots really look goofy with these pockets, so i'm not posting them - you guys are going to have to wait one more day

the good news is that it's really going to work - very happy with the way it's coming out
