went to drop it off today - upholsterer lost his mind - wanted to charge me a small fortune to develop it and wanted to make the prototype out of a fabric i didn't want to use, and couldn't sell when done - left there very bummed but in the knowledge i had made the right call, because if it was this weird before we even got started, i was certain it was not going to go well down the road - too bad, because they were very close to me, but oh well

went back home and did some calling around - took me a while but i found a MUCH better shop - a bit farther away, but it it works out, that's no big deal - i went over there and had the meeting this morning - when i told him the tale of woe, he knew right away which shop it was - that made me feel a lot better about my decision

bottom line, not only is this guy a LOT easier to work with, and has a great reputation, and his work looks great, but i am getting it done for less, and out of the fabric i want

i am now down below $600 per unit, and am working hard on getting closer to $550 for blue or black - other colors will be a bit more - i'll know how much more in a couple of hours

this afternoon i will be setting up the appointment for drop off - he can't get to it until next week though - rats - but he says 2 days to get the first one - 2 days after that for the first batch

woohoo!

Now we're talking...isn't it great when you have a good feeling about something. It's so rare these days.

Coolness!

Any chance you can sketch up what this will look like? Just curious to see what it might appear like over the seats- seeing as how the only tonneaus I've ever seen have been on older cars where the seat backs do not rise up so high like a modern vehicle.

If not, I can wait to see photos of the prototype.

Thanks again for the efforts!

a sketch wouldn't really show much, but i suppose i could try to knock one out - envision pockets that stick up from the horizontal surface and cover the headrests

Seat headrest condoms?!

Ahh - I see it now....

On a serious note, what if one wanted to put in different seats down the road? Could one possibly remove the existing pockets and have *new* ones made to fit??

To clarify, I have always batted around the idea of getting a "sportier" seat. As far as I can tell, it is only a matter of time before I make that happen. What will they be? Dunno yet. I've got my eye on a few options:

1) 968 CS hardbacks
2) Recaro sportster CS
3) Recaro trendlines
4) Recaro toplines
5) 996 hardback sport seats
6) ?

I'm leaning towards #5 at the moment- reasonably priced all things considered.

update - ordered fabric - dropping car off monday morning

will be made of german canvas (contrary to popular belief, that does not mean "from germany" - it means with the "grain" lines, just like the original top and boot cover, as opposed to smooth matte, like many after-market tops) - i believe it will be sonnendeck (might be sonnenland - won't be stay-fast) - will confirm that - the binding will be stay-fast acrylic - it lasts longer and is easier to work with

he expect 2 days to complete first unit - i will have final numbers on tuesday - will be taking orders for first batch at that time - the first batch will be a bit less than follow on orders, due to the nature of running a batch rather than one-off builds - this is sort of like a "group buy" - i will post "normal" numbers on tuesday as well as the "group buy" numbers

black or blue will be standard - other colors, as available, will be more expensive - i will know how much on tuesday

there will be tabs that insert into the two center defroster vent slots on top - no, they won't hurt the dash

Were going to need some speed tests at top speed. If you get those done during rush hour, we could watch the testing live on the news...
