tires for stock wheels
#1

i need new tires for my car, i currently have Potenza RE750's 205-55-16 front and 245-45-16 rear. i just got off the phone with tirerack and the guy was telling me they have no performance tires in those sizes. he wants me to go back to the 205 front and 225 rear, i really dont wanna do that. i was hoping they would have the Hankook Ventus r-s3's in the right sizes, but the guy said they didnt. he said the only bigger tire that might fit on the rear is a 255-50-16, thus opening up more tire options. does anyone know if this tire will fit with no problems? or does anyone know of any good tires that come in the sizes im using now?

With the stock sizes you're not likely getting any benefit from the extra contact patch because of the size of the wheels. You may find the width of the 225 will be the same as the 245 and have the added benefit of being stiffer owing to the better fit.

Yes, you can. According to the information on the Tire Rack's site, the tire is good for a 6-8" width. If you can find another pair of 7s you could run them all the way around and rotate front to rear. Looks to me like you could do 8s all the way around as well. The section width is 8, so they'd be nice and square.

You can easily run 225/50 & 245/45 combo which was the optional fitment on 944 turbos. Tire Rack show them available in the Fuzion (Bridgestone) brand. The measuring rim for the 225 is 7" and the 245 is 8". The "measuring rim" is used in determining the physical measurements of a tire. Changing the width of the rim will change the cross section measurement of the tire and will affect steering response and ride. Rule of thumb, the closer the sidewall is to vertical (90%+ rim width to cross section) the better the handling, but at a sacrifice of ride.

I went to look at a set of "lightly used" tires that a local PCA member has for sale. They have "90% tread left" according to him, since they were used on his Boxter for three months last year and then he got winter tires put on. Since then he has sold the Boxter with the winter tires.
The tires are Continental ContiSportContact 2. The rear are 255/40ZR17 (good fit) but... the front are 205/40ZR17... He only wants to sell the set of four (asking $400 CDN = ~$420 US).
I currently have POTENZA 225/40 on the front and they are in real good shape. I need to decide if the 205's will work for me, otherwise I am better off just buying the 255 rear from TireRack (~$410 US). Will I be happy with 205 at the front AND will they even work on the stock 17" rims?
