New Tires Sumitomo or Hankook
#21

Scott,

Interesting, that hasn't been my experience with the Sumitomo's at all. Their grip continues to astound, even after about a year and a half. There generally seems to be a lot of variabilty in tire pformane...

Cloud,

Just wondering about your suspension set-up for instance compared to mine. I wonder how much difference the tires would feel with difference sway bars, spring rates, etc.

But, I am glad you like the Sumitomo's and feel you have what you want.

Sumitomo HTR Z III have +2000 miles on them now and still very happy!
I have gone on a few "spirited" drives and they have performed well. I had to drive through some very heavy rain on the way back from Escape 2010 and they performed OK in the wet but in "puddled" water they did aqua-plane a bit, but that did not surprise me.
So far I have to say that I would buy them again for the Cab, since they do everything that I want from them.
If I had a coupe and went to the track on occasion I might go another route...

I like my sumitomos as well. I would say I have about 2000 miles on them with no issues. I have not been in any heavy rain though.........

As for the Hankook's - so far I'm very happy with them (about 1500 miles on them now) - There has been no noticeable difference in ride quality moving from 16 to 17 (very smoth and comfortable). The big difference is in road noise (granted these ar still preety new) compared to the RE750's they replaced these are easly twice as quiet...night and day difference. Handling wise I haven't pushed them that much yet but around town and freeway on/off ramps they seem to stick as well as the RE750's - not as sharp as my old SO3's but no complaints so far....and for half price.

This month's Consumer Reports, which I just received, has a tire comparison test, including summer high performance tires, and disappointingly, my beloved Sumitomo's did not fare very well - near the bottom of the list, actually. The latest Goodyear F1 came out on top. For some reason, tires seem to have the largest degree of variability of any product I can think of. I previously had a set of Kumho Ecsta's on my car, which were off the charts horrible in every respect, and they finished significantly ahead of the Sumitomo's in CR's test. Go figure...

How does consumer reports rate tires? Longevity, reliability? Seems that pub is so biased towards the lowest total cost of ownership (think Toyota and Honda) that a high perf tire would not fare well at all.

Consumer Reports needs to stick to refrigerators and LCD TV's. Tire Rack has there own course, their own drivers and they sell all brands. There have been rubber companies that have actually changed the construction of a tire after Tire Rack previewed it and gave it a negative review. Read what they say about the ZIII's. Also, GEEEZZZZ your comparing Godyear F-1's and S03's to a tire that costs 1/2 as much yet performs with the Michelin and Bridgestone and Pirelli. You want the best..............buy a set of Michelin's Pilot Sports.
