Poked my head in the garage last night and noticed what sounded like a faint dripping noise. I thought oh gwad a water leak, and started looking for a wet spot on the ceiling. All dry! So I walked pass the Camry to the far end of the garage and noticed it was getting louder. As I walked to the front of the 968 I noticed the tapping coming from under the hood. Was very clear if you put your head down at the wheel. I hop in to pop the hood and the sound was even more clear. It was on the passenger side coming through the vent. A steady tap tap tap tap. less the a sec apart. I pop the hood and <b>instantly </b>it stopped. looked under the hood and listened. nothing. I closed the hood and instantly it started again. I popped the hood again, it stopped again and this time I disconnected the battery and went to bed. I just got back from wedding and after a quick nap Im going to take a closer look.

Any Ideas at all? I have no clue how popping the hood effects anything.

There is a wire bundle that is attached to the driver's side hood attachment (ie the hinge, near the firewall). In my car some of the wires had cracked a bit due to opening and closing of the hood and flexing of these wires. Reconnect the battery and open the hood slowly. If it stops ticking at a certain point it is almost certainly something wrong in those wires. I simply had the bad part cut out and new piece spliced in for all of them and my problem (which was, in my car, the interior fans coming on when the hood was closed) was fixed. Your ticking might have been the interior fan running at speed 0 - if that is where you normally leave it). It also made my auxiliary high beam headlights start working for the first time. Go figure.

wiggle those wires with the hood open. My car was also snapping in the fuse box - one of the relays was being tripped by the contact.

I see the wires your talking about. There traveling inside the hoods panels. I spotted a circular harness with about 6 wires coming out. I tried to duplicate the sound but as it turns out my battery is too weak. The lights are dim and it wont start. So I need a jump and my other cars are out at the moment. So the wait goes on.

I just experienced the same thing with my '93 911 except the ticking was coming from the electronics under the passenger seat. I had been working on the car and the lamp underneath the hood had been on for several days until my battery was almost completely dead. I jumped the battery and ran the car and have no more ticking. I suspect your dead battery may be the source of your ticking as well.

Whats the connection between the popping the hood and the ticking stopping?

I was beginning to think that its alarm related, or a bad relay. I honestly have no clue.

If your battery was almost dead and making a relay click then popping the hoood could make it stop IF you have the hood light still connected. Pop the hood, light tries to glow sucking down the voltage even more and the relay can't click at all.
Now there's a theory worth funding!

my guess would be something alarm related, since that is just about the only thing that is triggered by the hood

try disconnecting the hood latch wiring

When the tall pin, directly right of the hood latch, is pushed down should the light go off?

That pin is very hard to push all the way down but when I did the light stayed on.

no, the light should not go out - the hood actually has to be closed to do that - that's why i said to disconnect it

i suspect it is not the light itself, but rather the wiring to it or the switch - the alarm will not arm if it is hinky - disable that wiring by disconnecting it

Gave the car a jump and let it run to charge the batt. The Battery is fine.

Shut off the car and waited for the tapping. Nothing! Open and closed the hood several times. Disconnected and re-connected the light open and closing the hood some more. Still nadda. Wiggled the alarm wires around and the wires that travel up under the hood. Cant get it to tick.

Also checked the fuses and they are all good. At this point the hood light is disconnected and I'll be popping my head in and out of the garage for the next few days and listening for the tapping.
