Tiptronic engine vibration.

As the six speed dual mass clutch can cause engine vibration i seem to have read somwhere I am thinking that as the tiptronic has the torque converter, what will cause the front of the engine to vibrate up and down at 2500RPM.

Above and below the that rev band all is ok.

In the drivers seat no vibration is felt.

Any ideas on any causes.

I do have a tiptronic version and at ± 2400 rpm the engine vibrates a little but that seems normal to me.

Other engines will shake a lot more.

It will probably occur due to a the fuel/air mixture is not equal at that enginespeed.



If you drive the engine will not vibrate. because the amount of fuel and air what goes in is a lot more!. more than 10 times then into his neutral position.

Balance shaft out of adjustment will also cause engine vibration at a certain RPM which goes away at different RPM. Have it checked, since if it breaks it can destroy the timing belt as well which will cause bent valves and a very expensive repair bill. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

Ofcourse Bob, But mine is in good condition and belttiming is good. Also there is no difference in compression als well form the cilinderes. But with the lean mixture in neutral the engine shakes a little, not much but a little.



It seems to me that if Wingers engine is in good condition and the belttiming is ok and the compression as well there is nothing wrong.

It looks normal to me.

3.0L four banger is a big piston to move and creates lots of vibration. Check basics and if all check out, then you're OK. Basics (as already mentioned) are: cam timing, balance shaft timing (must be exact), compression and both engine mounts. Porsche has spec for engine mounts in service manual, as follows:

1.Clearly discernible vibration while starting and /or turning off engine

2. Severe engine vibration(all basics perfect)

3.Pull on exhaust manifold to see if engine moves 2-3mm, if no then bad

4.Leakage

5.Removed mount is less than 65mm tall, installed mount is less than 62mm, measured between weight bearing surfaces.

IMHO, your OK, but your mounts are going soft with age. No need to replace until you're doing other work in there.

Our 95 Cab vibrates quite a bit at idle with the transmission in gear. It seems that a Cab is noisier or more vibration prone, so the extra ratttles and noise don't help. When I shift the Tip into neutral, the vibration is mostly gone and the car is noticeably quieter. It seems that the TIP is contributing to the engine vibration when in gear, but once shifted into neutral the vibration disappears.

Since the engine and transmission are physically separated, maybe it's a problem in between. I've changed transmission fluid (actually three partial changes) but the vibration persists. It seems the standard fix is new engine mounts and I realize that the TIP gets a heavier duty engine mount, but the weight of the TIP isn't hung on the engine; it's on the rear axle. Do cars with a TIP need heavier engine mounts because the car/engine is balanced for a clutch hanging on the rear of the engine and without it the car/engine is slightly unbalanced? Or are the heavier engine mounts needed because of the way the engine reacts to the load from the automatic transmission? Thoughts anyone?

probably because the engagement is potentially more abrupt - i used to rip motor mounts loose all the time in my hotrods that had automatics - never did it with the 4 speeds (broke a lot of trannies and rear ends though)



gives me an idea that i now need to research - it looks like i am ripping loose mounts now - my engine is starting to move around quite a bit - the specs are still good on the mounts, but i think they are soft

Can I get by with using manual mounts on my tip. Aftermarket ones are so much cheaper and haven't seen any tip part number available aftermarket.

with one exception, and i suspect they just haven't felt it when it's right, everyone says "NO"



i will be looking into this over the next 2 weeks as i complete the design on new motor mounts
