Hello folks,
Just wondering (alright complaining also) if anyone has run across a problem with the Tiptronic shifting maps. Essentially always I have to go to manual mode on the tip when going uphill. I think today it shifted into 4th gear at about 30 mph at or approx. 1.5K RPM and of course this made the engine lug. It seems I am often going up hill, behind a slower vehicle and have to manually downshift it. So it finally occurred to me that the P-Car engineering isn't that silly to make the car lug in certain circumstances, and provide a Tip that only performs well on level or downhill. There must be some sensor feeding the ECU to prevent this problem, perhaps a vacuum sensor. The ECU must be able to correlate the accelerator to the RPMs, but also should be able to correlate to vacuum or some other sensor associated with lugging. Any ideas where I might check? Thanks all!

Syncro,
I have the same feeling - But I think Porsche was focused on good fuel economy and low emmissions. There is sufficient torque in the engine to pull up a slight hill in 4th at 1500 rpm. I do not think it is lugging the engine, but rather that big four gets rough below 2000 rpm and that is what we feel. I have that hill on the way to work and I can hold the gas steady and she will pull all the way up at 30 mph. Step down a bit and the Tip downshifts. Because I do not like the roughness at low rpms I most often leave the tip in 3rd Auto in city traffic if speeds are in the 30 to 40 range. It starts in 1st and never shifts to 4th. This is much more satisfing drive till the road opens up and I can use the Tip manual at higher speeds.

Thanks Jack. I tend to agree with you that I have to spend more time in 3rd Auto. I usually forget to do this, since then the traffic goes up to 45-50, and then I prefer to shift up to 4th auto. But I find it uncomfortable to shift back and forth between 3rd Auto and 4th auto. When I leave home, the roads are very up and down and very windy, so I am usually in tip mode. It'll take more training on my part (the usual problem!).

[quote name='gryphon' post='32279' date='Mar 12 2007, 02:45 PM']I sure wish that some smart person would find a way to crack the Tiptronics codes and modify the shift pattern. I would nice just to take off in first gear without doing it manaually.

I looked into this in the fall and didn't find much (if anything). This is the closest I came so far....
