tiptronic atf

What would you guys suggest i use for atf. Just a good quality dexron, synthetic or conventional? so many options i just wanted suggestions.

If I recall, it calls for Dextron III; as for Dino vs Synth - really a personal preference. I'm not a big fan of synth (mostly due to cost) but have not heard any bad about using it in the trans, fluid changes in the trans will be around the same interval so it's not really a matter of "pay more change less" like with the engine .

I used Dexron III when I had a Tiptronic 968 and did not see any reason to change to synthetic. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

Seems like one of the big concerns with ATF changes is the condition of the fluid before the change. One shop didn't even want to change fluid if it was discolored. They felt that the new fluid would loosen junk and clog passages in the transmission. Other shops felt that it was best to get cleaner fluid in there and do a couple of changes until the fluid was bright pink again. I wonder if the synthetic ATF might loosen more stuff if the fluid had been dirty, burnt before the change. If the ATF is in good shape and looks fresh I would think that synthetic wouldn't cause any new problems. Unfortunately out ATF was brown and I opted to flush it with a couple of partial changes with old Dino. Seems others have done the same thing when the ATF had gone too far between changes. I suspect our ATF was the original and had 10+ years and 80K miles on it when I changed it last year.

The shop that wouldn't change the ATF if brown is both right and wrong. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/huh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> When I was wrenching for a living; many times a car would come in with burnt fluid and then the trans really would turn to s*** after a change <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/mad.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> . The reason (or at least part of it) was the fact the the seals inside would now be hard or worn out and the fresh fluid (now thinner than the old) would get past them and cause shift problems and such (that’s the right). However not changing it (thats the wrong) is like not changing the engine oil, it will cause failure. I say change it yourself, it's not hard (but is messy so have allot of oil dry on hand)

Now back to Dino or synth; the only thing I can think that may cause concern is the fact that the only way to get all the old fluid out (so your not mixing) is to pull the trans and disassemble it. Just pulling the pan and filter will get about 4-5 qts out, most auto trans will hold about 12 or so total (most in the converter and some in the cooler).

Again I say do it, remember the old Fram slogan? "Pay me now or pay me later"
