The story of my transmission rebuild
#1

So I finally got my car back today after 3 long weeks of having the transmission rebuilt. For those that don't know, I was hearing the dreaded jet engine noise for a while so I took it in.

They pulled the transmission apart and the pinion bearing, some roller bearing, and two ring bearings were shot.

Here are some pics, I think this is the ring bearing. You can see how little chunks of metal are missing from the bearings....

The total bill was:

Bearing 1: $233.15

Bearing 2: 109.98

Bearing 3: 95.71

Taper Roller Bearing: 101.24

Gasket set: $173.59

Oil: 26.04

Multi Gear Concentrate: 16.89

Labor: $1488.78

Total cost: $2391.71

I will say, I'm loving driving it now. I've always felt like the clutch was a real bear to push in, and it never shifted through gears as easily as I felt it should. Its a dream to drive now. So, I'm trying to tell myself it was worth the money <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

None of us want to go where you've been, but statistics says that some of us will be behind you. I'm crossing my fingers.

While the transaxle is apart would it make financial sense to have all bearings and synchro's replaced?

Anyone been through a total rebuild to give me an approx cost on this vs. "just what it needs"?

After all, these are hard working parts and the cars are all 10+ years old.

Would a top PM be able to do this king of job or are there "super 968 transaxle technicians" out there that would require shipment by truck?

no - mine were perfect - remember, the box only had 25k on it and the only reason i was in there at all was an "expert" mechanic told me imy rattle must be a bad bearing in the box
