My gas mileage hasn't really been where I'd like it, so I took a gander through my receipts...



In 120k miles, the O2 sensor has never been changed.





I'm planning on heading to kragen and picking up the bosch universal sensor meant for the 80's mustangs... I have no problem extending wires.



How bad are these cars about having those O2 sensors actually come off? I know the sensor is down by the starter, but is there room down there to get a decent sized wrench on the sensor?

I just replaced mine with the BOSCH_15726 universal, it was real easy. I sprayed my old one down with some penetrating lube first and it came right off with a wrench.

If the sensor is bad you should get a fault code. Mine did. It was easy to change and I sprayed mine with L-Wrench the night before as well.

It's a very tight fit; one technique is to take it out with the exhaust pipe still hot. The expansion of the pipe metal makes the sensor come out more easily.

O2 sensors can start to go bad, long before they throw a fault code. This results in a drop in gas mileage, higher emissions, etc.



The recommended replacement interval on an o2 sensor is generally 60k miles... mine has twice that.
