THE WHEELS THAT CAME ON OUR CAR
#21

i find it very hard to believe that something offered in the owner's manual does not have an option code

but, i have a meeting with PCNA today on this very subject

We all know stranger things have happened with Porsche, so this shouldn't be too surprising, no?

I guess I would have to ask this- do floor mats have an official factory option code for new cars? Haven't bought a new car in nearly 6 years but I seem to recall that dealer-installed "accessories" like floor mats and such typically do not show on the official window sticker and therefore do not have an official option code. I always remembered seeing a separate piece of paper with such accessories and goodies - all handwritten. Seems to me the winter wheel package for the 968 (as well as the wind deflector) falls into this category - dealer-installed accessories with no formal factory option code.

not sure about the floormats - i'll have to look

where i think the difference would be are things that are specifically listed in the owner's manual, like the wheels - the windscreen and floormats aren't in there

I think the difference would be in what the factory considers an accessory versus what they consider an option. With winter wheels, I would surmise 99.9999% of the buyers wouldn't want to swap out their standard 16s or 17s for a set of winters. And typically, options on a build sheet replace a standard item with a different item - and you do not get to keep the standard item. Accessories, on the other hand, are typically items available in addition to everything else and they don't normally substitute for a standard item.

I am guessing Porsche considers the winter wheel package an accessory that compliments the car. It was not intended as an option which would be to replace the standard wheels.

My $0.02.

reasonable logic, and as plausible as anything else - that would be the only "accessory" i have found that is talked about in the owner's manual though

as i said, i have a meeting with PCNA today about, among other things, options for the 968, so i should have more definitive information soon

Bio,

Good thoughts. I have a 2006 Audi A4 S-line. With the 18" wheels on the car you could get either the summer tires or all seasons at no extra cost. My window sticker reads summer tires, no cost. I do see floor mats on some of the my 968 window stickers as a $125 option but most don't have it listed so again, another dealer installed feature with an additional price.

Bob,

Don't hold up too much hope for your PCNA discussion. They don't even remember what a 968 was. I find the best source is period correct PCNA documentation and sales books which I have a full collection of.

Send me (or post) the last three digits of your VIN and I'll tell you if you are one of the four. Painted wheels were an easy option to add (after the fact).

<!--sizeo:2--><!--/sizeo--><!--sizec--><!--/sizec--> I sure like the Cup 2's on my 968 and 951. Now if I could find a Batwing that wasn't busted up.

When looking at the BMW site, the winter wheel package is dealer installed, along with other things offered.

I'm looking for 17" wheels in the original styles.

At the end of post #1 beginning this thread, flash indicates there were other sizes and offsets for the C2 Turbos, but those sizes are not listed.

Were there other offsets for the 7.5 and 9" width set (non-magnesium) or just the 65, 55?

What were the different sizes/offsets for the magnesium wheels that the C2 Turbo was based on?

Can someone with the later 17" rims (993 362 124 05)  verify that the wheel width of 7.5 is stamped on the wheel by the valve stem area.  I'm looking at a set that has only a 7 stamped in the area .  The offset is stamped 55, which indicates it is not the correct rim for an OEM 968 rim.  It would help me to identify the correct rim if it is stamped 7.5  .

Thanks,

Carl

Thanks Flash but do the wheels have the 7.5" stamped on the wheels near the valve stems?
