a few months ago, i finally gave up on trying to "quick fix" the oil consumption issue i had been having since the dyno testing of the supercharger. it turned out that i had bent 3 of the 4 rods due to exceeding the maximum pressures they could handle.



so, i decided the rings were shot and i needed new ones. well, the story didn't end there, and as it turned out, i had bent rods (i'll post shots of those later), screwed bores, and a whole lot of other crap. on top of that, some of the work i had previously had done, and paid good money for, turned out to be in need of rework, as some shortcuts were taken that were not optimal.



so, in for a penny - in for a pound. $20k later, i have a new motor with 104.5mm pistons, carillo rods, coated bearings, and a few very trick internal mods. this should make for a VERY tight motor.



we also discovered some flaws in the factory cam timing procedure, as well as the other procedures floating around out there. i'll post more on that in a separate thread, as it will be highly technical and likely controversial.



so, here she is back in the garage. the fenders are hanging on the wall, eagerly awaiting reinstallation, as is the front end et all.



of course, a whole list of other stuff is being done "while i'm in there". news at 11 on all of that, but suffice it to say that i am taking one last shot and wrapping up some long postponed projects.

Too funny. At least you seem to be able to have your toys as well. In my case, the wife and all kids all have iPhones (along with every other product Apple sells), while I have a piece-of-crap phone I got for a buck as part of my contract, and an 8-year-old windows machine that should be in a museum somewhere. Haven't bought a new pair of shoes in at least five years, either. Reminds me of a sign I saw at a condo we stayed at once - "Father's dream: to someday live as well as his wife and kids..." Oh, well, someday the 968 will be done (though I have my doubts some days), and it should be a blast.

Yeah, it's pretty amazing (and depressing). I'm no one-percenter, but I'm a solid 5-percenter, with a mortgage payment that's smaller than many people's electric bill, and still, usually there's more month than money. Please tell me I'm not alone...

so, the work begins today. i have a couple of vendor meetings, so we'll see how far i get, but i'm really looking forward to driving it, so i expect to get quite a few things done.



i've already spend a half day working out some new parts designs that i have been wanting to get to. pretty excited about a couple of them, as the time away allowed me to do some "out of the box" thinking and resolve a couple of complications i ran into before, that now seem simple. funny how that works.
