The right lug nuts
#1

Well , I got tired of looking at those ugly black aluminum lug nuts and thought I'd replace them with some nice chrome ones. Brought home a box of 14mmX1.5 Acorn style lug nuts with the standard 60 degree wheel flnge and bolted one on. I pulled it back off and looked at the contact mark on the lug. It appears that only the very leading edge is contacting the wheel which gives me some serious concern. The OE Porsche lug nuts have a large flange area with a much larger area of contact.

The mounting flanges on the hub are pretty stout and will keep any wheel on center, so the lugs merely hold the wheel to the hub and don't carry weight. Anybody else using standard chrome lugs? What am I missing here??

I think I answered my own question. Looking at the pics at the EZAccesories site, it appears that we need a "ball seat" lug which definately has a larger contoured seat area vs the standard 60 degree seat on U.S. cars. $ 1.89/lug for chrome. Cheapest I found.

Just and FYI, but the OEM aluminum lug nuts polish quite easily to a very "chrome-like" appearance.

I'll assume you have to use a buffing wheel and assorted compounds??

I can advise to use a soft socket to tighten or lose these alloy nuts. It's a socket with nylon insert to avoid rounding the edges of these fragile nuts.

It's a real pain in the a... to get a rounded nut off. Personally I'm still searching steel nuts for the 968, not the open race types.

Check out the EZAccesories site I mentioned above. See if you don't agree, they sure look like the alloys replacement.

Performance Products, Vertex Auto, EagleDay, Pelican... most places charge about 20 bucks or so.
