That dragging feeling (brakes that is;)
#1

Hi guys,

I'm hoping someone can help me with a problem I have.

Recently my brakes haven't been feeling quite right. They squeal a lot and I'm getting a 'dragging' feeling any time I hit the brakes hard. If I'm decelerating slowly they feel fine. In my mind I was thinking about changing the brake pads and then after reading a number of posts, maybe the rotors as well. I read a number of posts on the forums and felt that I was armed with the right information, but then I decided to check the cars service history. What I found out was interesting...

At 46K miles (my car now has 56K miles - bought at 48K) the brake discs, pads, rotors, mounts with bushings and fluid were all replaced! That was only 10K miles ago! Also, I had a good look at the rotors today and they feel very smooth, cetainly no signs of grooves of any sort.

So I'm confused. If all this work was done only 10K ago, what can be causing this 'dragging' sensation I'm feeling when I brake a little harder than normal? From reading your posts in sounds highly unlikely that they'd need changing after only 10K miles. The car hasn't been on a track, and I only drive the car back and forth to work (10 mile commute).

Any ideas would be hugely appreciated at this point.

cheers,

milton

Hi,

The dragging feeling may be the result of 'plate lift' in the brake calipers. Due to corrosion of the caliper the steel plates in the caliper (top and bottom) can deform forcing the pads against the rotors or at least prevent them from moving back from the rotor. To fix this you need to remove the plates and do someting to the corrosion and install new plates but removing the small bolts that hold the plates is difficult. Porsche sells these plates as a repair set. A quick solution may be grinding down the upper and lower edge of the brake pads backing giving them a bit more space to move around.

You did not mention whether the brake lines had been replaced. If not this could also account for the problem. The interior of the lines corrodes over time and fluid does not flow smoothly (for want of a better description). When you press on the pedal the pressure is enough to force the fluid. But releasing the brakes has no direct pressure and so the calipers do not disengage properly.

I recently replaced pads and rotors. Afterwards the brakes felt exactly as you describe. Changing the brake lines cured the problem.

Good Luck!
