Hi guys, I have a newly acquired 1992 968 and got virtually no maintenance records when I bought it. It has 57K miles on it and runs like a top. I am inclined to have a belt and water pump change just for safety's sake, but the prices I am getting look like the national debt. I am certainly not a Porsche mechanic, but am 65 years old, retired and have plenty of time and a pretty good collection of tools. My question is: how difficult is this procedure and how many special tools are involved. I love the car and plan to keep it so would like to know more about how it works, but also do not want to bite off more than I can chew. Any suggestions I am getting prices of $1600 and above for belts and water pump. Thanks mountainman in NC

I would bet it doesn't need a water pump. The 968 is not like the 944 series in that respect.

There are a few tools you would need (flywheel lock, triple square wrenches, balance belt tension wrench) but you could have them all for under $300.

The work is not bad and there are gret resources here on this site as to how-to most things.

I would give it a go if I was you. Sounds like you can take your time and if you get stuck you can ask questions on this site.

I second Ryan, it's all right up front except the flywheel lock. A lot of bending over but you can lean on the front end (stay off the fenders, they dent easy!!)
