Taking Tie Rods Off the Rack
#1

So, I dropped my steering rack yesterday and now wondering how to take loose the tie rods from the rack. I see machined flats on the tie rods, but how do you counter-hold the steering rack? It's perfectly round, and obviously you can't grab it with a pipe wrench since any scratch or nick on the rack and then that will ruin the seal.

So, how about it, what's the hot tip on this? Also, anyone know the torque figure for the tie rod-to-rack connection?

Many thanks!

If I remember correctly, if you squish the boot back there should be a place you can put another wrench on...

If not, I don't see any problem with using vice grips towards the end where a few burrs won't hurt anything...

You need a pretty wide wrench for that spot behind the boot. I'm thinking it was like a 28mm wrench I used recently on it.
