ABS light periodically blinking and now doesn't shut off
#1

There seems to be a bit of stuff already discussed on this and my "blinking" was no different from the others until the ABS light came on and stayed on. One wheel sensor was apparently bad and was replaced but no change in light.

I asked to have ground wires checked and all were good.

Could the DME relay do this?

Kim,

Is this the same blinking caused by a faulty brake light?

Check the grounds under the dash left hand side , unless already done

When you stick your head under there , left top in the corner , there are 2 ground points , one of them if bad will trigger the light .

Olaf first of all check the relay of the ABS. if it is bad that causes your problem. see other topic about it.

The ABS relay can be a problem. I have also wired a DMM to the inputs from each wheels in turn to monitor the voltage to see if all sensors are sending a decent signal. You should see the signal while driving around slowly. Around 0.5 to 1.5 VAC is what I recall seeing when I did this on a 928. I was able to poke probes into the ABS brain harness without cutting or anything.

Three bulbs were burned out on 3rd brake light. They are on order but does anyone think that this could be the problem?

I've not had the problem personally, but I remember reading about it.

It's possible. I would try disconnecting the battery for a while- an hour or so- and see if the car forgets it.

So.

I was advised today that after replacement of the 4 burned out bulbs in the 3rd brake light that the ABS sensor is still on. I am going to pick the car up on Monday and bring it home and try to figure it out myself. $120/hr is Ok if the problem is fixed but a tough pill to swallow otherwise. Porsche just can't seem to do much of anything if the car cannot be "plugged in" to be diagnosed.

When i get it home I will use my Durametric cable to see if the light can be tunred out - Porsche has no tools to do this for a 968. But I am not sure if the function is available with the Durametric. Anybody have one and have done this?

Maybe a few hours of driving will also cause it to forget the code. Maybe not.

One wheel speed sensor was replaced (it was "tested" and found to be faulty but I don't know if the others are any good - they tested fine). Battery was disconnected with no luck.

Ground wires were cleaned.

Now, back to the first line. So, any other suggestions?

Also, and unrelated, I'll be dammed if I can add a new picture to my "signature" bar on the left.

Well like I said you can check for voltage from the wheel speed sensors. You have to probe the wires from each wheel and set the DMM where you can see it while moving. Also borrowing an ABS relay is a good test, these are generally not bog-simple relays but have internal circuits which can fail in odd ways:

The interchange I see for the Bosch W0133-1623490 is as follows:

  • 1986-1989 Mercedes-Benz 190D

  • 1986-1987 Mercedes-Benz 190E

  • 1987-1989 Mercedes-Benz 260E

  • 1987-1993 Mercedes-Benz 300D

  • 1986-1993 Mercedes-Benz 300E

  • 1992-1993 Mercedes-Benz 300SE

  • 1988-1993 Mercedes-Benz 300TE

  • 1990-1991 Mercedes-Benz 350SDL

  • 1992-1993 Mercedes-Benz 400E

  • 1993-1993 Mercedes-Benz 400SEL

  • 1993-1993 Mercedes-Benz 600SEC

  • 1993-1993 Mercedes-Benz 600SL

  • 1994-1995 Mercedes-Benz C220

  • 1995-1995 Mercedes-Benz C36 AMG

  • 1994-1995 Mercedes-Benz E420

  • 1994-1995 Mercedes-Benz S420

  • 1994-1997 Mercedes-Benz S600

  • 1994-1995 Mercedes-Benz SL500

  • 1989-1994 Porsche 911

  • 1989-1995 Porsche 928

  • 1992-1995 Porsche 968

Durametric might also be able to see individual ABS sensor voltages.

Section 45 of the workshop manual is the ABS section. Can anyone guess which section I do not have? The ONLY section that I do not have? Anyone have a section 45 that they can forward to me?

Joel, there is NO possibility that my skill level will let me tackle testing individual wheel speed sensors. However, I might try to find a spare ABS relay. I did ask to have another one installed as a test but I don't know if that was done or not.

KIM, You can also make a bypass for the relay, it is the same method as jumpering the dme relay. It gives a quick answer if the relay is bad.

Just had the same issue. Turned out to be the ABS relay was bad. Replaced that and problem went away.

I borrowed a relay - good to have a reliable car in the neighborhood that I used to own. Will try it on Monday.

The other relay made no difference. So I have the car back, ABS and warning lights on, new wheel sensor, new ground on battery, all connections checked, no real idea of waht to do next. I will attached the Durametric cable later and run it with the software to see if at least the light can be turned out - it might be like an airbag light and physically need to be turned out. Otherwise, I'm at a loss.

But at least I have a new starter, A/C compressor, windshield wipers and alignment. And a $3000 bill and I supplied the parts. 968s are fun.

Kim,

Does the ABS light come on when you start the car, or only once it's moving over a certain speed?

Comes on after about 10 secs. Car does not need to be moving.
