The " glazed " brakes dilemma
#21

I think SUVs are built with long lasting robust brakes.

I just had our Acura MDX brake pads replaced at about 90K miles. They probably had another 10K miles left but a rotor was pulsing and they also needed to be bled so I went ahead and had them change the pads at the same time.

Probably more than half of the mileage being city driving.

My folks just had their Lexus RX brakes replaced at about 150K miles. Mostly highway driving for them.

Just looked up the topic on a Jeep forum, looks like the average life of the front pads is between a minimum of  75 K miles, to over 100 K miles.  rear pads closer to 125 + K .   (  a 4,600 lbs vehicle !  )  That's insane.

My Maserati pads ( a 4,200 lbs car ) are at 38 K miles and I doubt I can get another 2 or 3 k miles of of them  before the wear alert comes on the dashboard..

And the 968, or well... see previous posts, at this rate I may get half a million miles out of those !!        :o  Huh    But since the car brakes perfectly fine , I'm not messing with it.

brake wear is determined by many factors, such as pad compound, pad size, rotor type, rotor size, vehicle weight, and driving habits.  all of these also affect braking distance.  it's basic physics.

for example, a hard pad on a hard rotor will wear well, but not stop well.  a soft pad will wear fast, but generally stop better.  a hard pad on a soft rotor will also stop better, but tear up rotors.

as an example, the pads on the denali lasted about 40k.  the pads on my a3 are original, at the same mileage, and have a good amount of life left.
